help - carpal tunnel injury?
on: July 24, 2005, 06:31:18 AM
Since I've resumed playing seriously around six months ago I've ramped up my practice to about 3-4 hours a day (this is after a long spell where I didn't play). I've now developed the most crippling pain in my right forearm. sometimes it's in my wrist and other times it's higher up, and my wrist looks slightly swollen. My piano techer reckons it might be my carpal tunnel. I can't believe that just ás I'm really getting into things I'm being sabotaged. Has anyone experienced this before? And what should I do? I'm trying just to use my left hand and rest my right, but it's so hard  :'(.

Wow, if you have "most crippling pain" you must see a doctor immediately. I can't believe that your teacher is just sitting there speculating about the causes, instead of sending you to a doctor right away.

CTS is not something to joke around with. Just giving it rest may not be enough. Have it properly diagnosed first.

Good luck!

When you get back in to playing, use a tensor bandage on your wrists and play for no longer than 10 minutes at a time...with a 10 minute break between each session. It will take you 8 hours to practice 4, but it's better than nothing..
