Help me finalize my recital round
on: July 26, 2005, 09:15:06 AM
Anyways.... I have made a slight change in that previously mentioned recital round.  It used to be:

Alkan Symphonie pour Solo Piano Op. 39                                        (27:00)
Debussy Images Suite II                                                             (13:00)
Xenakis "Herma"- Musique Symbolique                                           (7:45)
Scarlatti Sonatas K. 298, 417 and 517                                          (8:00)
Messiaen Regards de l'Esprit de Joye                                            (8:15)
Wagner-Liszt Isolda's Liebestod                                                   (8:15)

But is now:

Alkan Symphonie pour Solo Piano Op. 39                                        (27:00)
Debussy Images Suite II                                                             (13:00)
Xenakis "Herma"- Musique Symbolique                                           (7:45)
Scarlatti Sonatas K. 298, 417 and 517                                          (8:00)
Tchaikovsky-Pletnev Concert Suite from the Ballet "Nutcracker"   (16:30)

The Isolda's got dropped but the Andante Maestoso from Nutcracker gets the same job done, but I feel like I really lost something when I dropped the Messiaen.  Here are the EXACT times (done today) of all of these pieces:

Alkan Symphonie pour Solo Piano Op. 39                                        (25:58)
Debussy Images Suite II                                                             (12:33)
Xenakis "Herma"- Musique Symbolique                                           (7:30)
Scarlatti Sonatas K. 298, 417 and 517                                          (6:54)
Tchaikovsky-Pletnev Concert Suite from the Ballet "Nutcracker"   (16:20)

All of that adds up to 66 minutes and 195 seconds... ergo  69:15.  That leaves 5:45 worth of time in my round and I need to choose an atonal modern work to fit in that slot.  I know Herma is modern but avante-garde serialistic pieces are sort of in a category of their own and i need something that at least has some noticable form.  So please vote for one of those things up there.  I'm just gonna go with whatever gets the most votes.  I play all of them at the same general level of goodness.  The Babajanian is the most virtuostic, the Ligeti is the most challenging musically, and the Prokofiev I can get out extremely fast and showy.  I asked my teacher and he said any of them would be good choices (big help....).

Also, what order should I play these pieces in?

Oh.  The Babajanian.

Bajanian is CRAZY!!!  Do you think it's easier in the end than prokofiev?  Although IT's so f****ing fast, it's not like huge chords really fast....
Interested in discussing:

-Prokofiev Toccata
-Scriabin Sonata 2

Not sure why I am the only voter at the moment for the Ligeti Etude, but it is one of my favorite ligeti etudes.  I would like to hear it in a recital.

Meh.  I think probably everyone is voting for the Prokofiev because it's the only one they're familiar with.  I want to go with the Babajanian but it runs like 5 minutes, and that's cutting it too close.  My prokofiev is like closer to 3 than 5 so I'm gonna play it safe and go with that.  Here it is, in this order:

Alkan Symphonie pour Solo Piano Op. 39
Debussy Images II
Xenakis "Herma" - Musique Symbolique
Scarlatti Sonatas K. 298, 417 and 517
Prokofiev Toccata Op. 11
Tchaikovsky-Pletnev Concert Suite from the Ballet "Nutcracker"

I would play Alkan last.

hey, do you think one of you could send (or post up a link!) me the sheet music for pletnev's transcription of pas de deux [andante maestoso]? sorry that I post in the wrong section, but I REALLY need that sheet music!

 Dear Skepto:
 First, let me say that my vote is Ligeti. Then, let me ask you: why did you cut Messiaen? Nothing against Tchaikovsky, but I really don't like this transcription. However, I think that's not time to another change, so here's a suggestion about the order:
 - One of Scarlatti's;
 - Alkan
 (intermission)
 - Another Scarlatti;
 - Xenakis (or Ligeti);
 - Debussy;
 (intermission two)
 - Ligeti (or Xenakis);
 - Tchaikovsky.

 Another idea, more conventional, would be:
 - Scarlatti;
 - Debussy;
 - Alkan;
 (intermission)
 - Xenakis and Ligeti;
 - Tchaikovsky.

 Hmmm...just another one:
 - Xenakis
 - Debussy
 - Tchaikovsky
 (intermission)
 - Ligeti
 - Scarlatti
 - Alkan

 Would you like any of it? Anyway, you have an interesting and intriguing repertoire, with some works that are barely heard. That's very cool.
 Best wishes!

Considering this thread is close to two years old...

How'd it go, Soliloquy?

Phil

Didn't get in.  Didn't even use this rep if I remember correctly.  Used something close to:

Chopin Ballade No. 1 in G Minor Op. 23
Rachmaninov Etude Op. 39 No. 5 "Appassionata", Etude Op. 39 No. 1, Etude Op. 33 No. 8 "Grave"
a few scarlatti sonatas, probably some mixture of 98/141/237/298/348/417/450/517
Nancarrow Tango? or something similar
Bach CF&F
Selection of Debussy Preludes
Prok Toc
Scriabin Sonata 4/Vers la Flamme

at the suggestion of my ex-teacher.  I didn't like this rep at all, and I had to submit a Beethoven piece that I had almost no time to record, ergo fucked up pretty bad.  Plus it was the Op. 109 and i was only 16, so obv this wasn't a good idea.  Once again, my retard teacher.

w/Prokcon2 instead of Barber, Prok5 or Bartok2, which were my personal choices.
