Which Composer speaks to you?
on: July 29, 2005, 02:33:13 PM
This is not a "Who is the best composer thread"

I was curious about which Composer has managed to speak to you in all of his songs...

For instance...I love much of Bach, but some of his music does not impact me. I love Beethoven and chopin, but some of it floats by without really moving me...

But there are two composers where everything they have written (that I have heard or played so far) means a great deal to me...

They are Brahms and Haydn.

How about you? I am curious to hear some 20th century examples...Aaron copeland was a fairly distant third...

Everything by Brahms, Mozart, and Mahler speaks to me.  For all other composers, at least 10%-20% of their output does nothing for me . . . . . . . . even Beethoven has a fair amount of dross.

There are no composers every work of whose affects me on some level, but the vast majority of the works I've heard by my four favourite composers fall into that category; between them, they have written a significant number of the pieces I find most moving.  And those four are Chopin, Debussy, Mahler, and Shostakovich.  Admittedly, all four have written pieces I don't like very much or even outright detest (Debussy somewhat more than the other three), but they have written so many of my favourite pieces (taking just two by each, Scherzo No.4 and the Barcarolle, the Images and the Ballade, the second and fourth symphonies, and the E minor piano trio and first cello concerto (especially the slow movement)) that I could, and sometimes do, listen to pieces only by one of those four for hours on end.

I simply fell in love and connected in every shape way in form with the music of Villa-lobos, especially his piano music. I am planning to center my junior recital around his music.

I've got a CLOSE composer...

Everything by Chopin except for ONE PIECE speaks to me. And that piece is the Waltz Op.69 No.1 in Ab major (Adieux). For some reason that piece does not speak to me at all.

Do I still count?

Prokofiev

...

then Brahms.

Seems like the intimacy of Brahms' pieces really has a powerful effect on people; good to know. :)

Brahms speaks to me...
Beethoven has a conversation with me...
Chopin visits me...
Rachmaninoff lives in me...
And Bach is my soul...

Stupid, isn't it? But it is true. ;)
