I'd like to listen to some of your repertoire (in addition to your Scriabin waltz, your Liszt Spanish rhapsody and your Chopin Etude). Is it available?

The question is "only" about technique which Rosina Lhevine said could always be taught.  Musicality and musicianship are worlds apart, and those are not taught.  They are gifts.

Check the audition room. The playing is nothing short of jaw-dropping.

Has anyone mentioned the Labèque sisters yet? What do you think of them?

she has really independant finger work and grace and style.  i don't know why - but i wish that in piano competitions people didn't have to wipe off the last person's sweat from the keyboard.

The randomness of your comment is an utter disgrace, considering you have just witnessed the single greatest female pianist in history.

ok. there's one more complaint.  why can't she wear a diamond braclet.  just an idea.  i mean the leather one is just a bit off.

btw, you might just be right about single greatest female pianist.  i think she's really graceful and has a beautiful sound and well-inspired interpretations.

I also would like to point Ingeborg Baldaszti. I saw her playing La Campanella in a program that António Victorino d'Almeidas has made about the history of the piano and she was simply awesome. She plays in every episode, but that of the first episode was the most impressive so far (the show is airing now in Portuguese television).

I believe it's a Stravinsky etude.

BUT, I have noticed when I hear others attempting the same repertoire, Hamelin still often dominates.

Though when Hamelin attempts that standard reperotire, the "standard" pianists tend to beat him. How about Hamelin's version against:

Horowitz- Rachmaninov Concerto 3, Rachmaninov Sonata no.2, Barber Sonata
Argerich- Schumann Sonata no.2
Hofmann- Listz's Waldesrauschen

It is just so unfortunate none of the great masters recorded Alkan and Godowsky. I repeat Rachmaninov and Cziffra was said to play Alkan, Barere played Godowsky.

Hofmann played Godowsky's Fledermaus after just hearing it once(I read he also played an obscure Liszt piece after hearing Lhevinne play it twice). Then it would be fair comparison if they did.

I don't know what criteria you are using to say they 'beat' Hamelin.

Judging on technical facility alone, Hamelin slaughters Horowitz in the Rach sonata, though Horowitz had the age handicap.

Argerich had great octaves, which may equal Hamelin, and Hofmann may have had great fingers which may equal Hamelin, but neither had them in the combined forces which Hamelin posesses.

I still think from a technical all-round standpoint, Hamelin is the most amazing pianist in the world.

Though if they played side by side in Rach Sonata, Hamelin might not even be heard!

And Hofmann's octaves were not as slow as most people think(well, not on the level of Argerich but they were certainly not slow). And Hofmann's fingerwork does not equal but beats Hamelin in terms of control and articulation. Have you heard Hofmann's repeated notes? It might leave Hamelin in  :'( (And I'm not even exaggerating here  ;D)

The speed of repeated notes is dependant more on the action of the piano than the speed of the fingers.

And I disagree about articulation and other things, I haven't heard any better from Hofmann, though he certainly was a marvel.

Back on topic, Grimaud is quite nice  ;D

Grimaud is beautiful! Argerich was as well during her youth.

Grimaud is  beautiful, agreed!  :-*  but on the subject of which female has the best technique it is probably impossible to give a definitive answer with this type of question, although you can name a handful who could equally justify that status. Well, i shall put Kathryn Stott's name forward (also, she was beautiful in her youth!). Anyone who is a prize winner at a competition as prestigious as Leeds absolutely has to have a world class technique, and she achieved it on merit in direct in direct competition with the best young males at the time.
