Boogie-Woogie!
on: September 07, 2005, 10:25:51 PM
Derek from PF got me hooked on boogie.....amazing music.
Just wondering if anyone else here played boogie or had any tips for just starting out. I've been trying to do some research but haven't found anything yet.

I'm discovering that not many people do....a shame, it's incredible music.

I have to agree. I wish that there were someplace that I could learn some boogie. I'm classically trained and have always had a soft spot for it.
Can anyone recommend how to get started?
George

i came to love BW because my grandad used play it all the time.
Check out stuff by albert ammons and mead lux lewis, he wrote pieces like the honky tonk train blues and other similar titles.
in the audition forum, silvaone posted "stromy night blues" sounds like he could help you find some direction.

I played some on some boogie woogie festivals and I'm quite 'into the scene' lol. The first important thing to do is get a stable left hand, when you have one, improvise a bit with the right hand at the same time.

Although this style originated as folk music in the U.S.A., George Thomas was one of the first to publish and record. "New Orleans Hop Scop Blues" is an early work (1923) with sheet music published by Clarence Williams.

well,
I have learnt a bit of boogie and i must say there is quite a lot of it out their so you shouldnt have trouble finding it.
My piano teacher taught me boogie a few years back, and i got this great book called somthing like introduction to jazz boogie and blues. it had all kinds of fun things for beginners
Now i also do aswell as AMEB grade 6, I do the CPM courses and you learn a bit about boogie in them so you might be interested
