hehehe, how about how many are geeky enough to be at an online forum? ^^ f... although it will get messy if everyone starts posting a message just to say f or m, i wonder if there's another way to do this?

Allchopin: Good idea, but asking is too easy! You should be able to figure out the gender of members first by their screen names and secondly by the language of their posts.

It is obvious that Hmoll and Rachfan are men by their syntax and choice of words.

There are also some adolescent males on the forum who reveal themselves by their bad manners and poor grammar.

And if dreamaurora, chopinetta and amee aren't young women, well...then maybe you have to do the survey after all.

Ned> thats true to some degree :)  I mean, TheMusicMan? Female...? heh.

Well, just for the sake of this topic, I'm a male.

How many people would name themselves from an element?...

Ned, as an adolescent male I am offended! Additionally, one should not start a sentence with the word "and". Why imply males should have incorrect grammar but not females, and that adolescents should have incorrect grammar but not adults?

And can be used correctly to begin a sentence (as such!), though it is rarely done.  But hey, am I a m or f? hehe that should leave you wondering.

allchopin i hope you're a guy cause your name is brian or something hehe

*cough* i actually, well, i mentally thought Hmoll and Rachfan were male, but every time i saw the names they sounded feminine to me... i don't know, Hmoll reminded me of molly, and Rachfan reminded me of Rachel.. you know, that nickname, Rach = Rachel

Ed:

You ask what case I rested?

That's lawyer talk. There comes a point in a trial where you may decide that you do not need to introduce any further evidence or call any more witnesses, so you "rest."  You may have heard a lawyer say,"The defense rests, your Honor." The case then may go to the judge or a jury for decision, or the other side may continue to present.

In my post I made several statements.  There were a number of replies which I believe amply confirmed what I had said.  So I rested.

Ned,
I understand the phrase "I rest my case". This was not what I was asking you though. I was inquiring vis-a-vis the contents of the case, seeing as none of it seemed to be confirmed by your statements,

For Ed's eyes only, in order not to spoil the thread for others or to distract allchopin from his goal!!

Ed:
It is true that I did not offer backup for my theories. They may be imprecise; they may be based on intuition. But so far no one has offered proof that they are incorrect.

I should ask you whether you disagree that:
1. Hmoll and RachFan are male. (Apologies to them for mentioning their names again.)
2. I said SOME (not necessarily all) adolescent males can be identified from boastful, impertinent, hot headed or  inarticulate posts. (There have been a number of these over the life of the forum. I am not criticizing the behaviour; I admire it, but I am saying that such posts tell you something about the gender and age of  the author.)
3. Chopinetta, amee and dreamaurora are female. Any disagreement with that?
That's all I said.

This forum is, in some ways, like a masked ball. You can  read the clues or you can ask for identification.  It's just a matter of taste.

Despite some progress in the area of gender equality some levels of society would still adhere to the old fashioned notion that playing the piano is more for girls than for boys.  Anecdotal evidence from piano teachers would suggest that this is still the case.  Although my pseudonym is tosca1, I usually sign off with my first name to leave no one in any doubt!
Kind regards,
Robert.

Ned is correct in that one can deduce much about another through their writing.  Syntax, word chioce, and writing styles, can speak volumes of ones personality.

I am a male and 15 years old.

Along the lines of this issue, is it just my perception or does there seem to be a higher percentage of males among the truly eminent pianists than females?  I could be mistaken, but when I walk into any shop that sells piano cds, it seems that there are many more men recorded than women.

Im a male.  The guys at work always joke around with me about how many pianists are gay.  I am not gay.  Im offended that I am stereotyped just because I play the piano.
