Am considering installing "Quiet Keys" https://www.pppkeys.com/index.html so that I can practice while our kids are asleep.  Has anyone used this system?  How effective is it?  Does it in any way harm the piano?

Thanks very much in advance!

I am certainly not the expert on this, but I'll relay what one of the salespeople told me when I inquired about a system to mute the sound - I don't know if it was "Quiet Keys" or not.

His advice was that if I want to have quiet practice time, I'm better off buying an inexpensive keyboard/digital piano. The cost is similar to installation of the system you describe, and it won't affect the resale of your piano, or involve any modifications.

I have a cheapo Casio Privia PX100 for practice when people are asleep. I paid about $500 including a stand.

Is it my piano? - No
Is it really good? - No
Does it have great tone - No
Does it have great touch - No
Is it my acoustic piano - No (and my acoustic is crappy!)
Is it silent - Yes - with headphones
Is it cheap - Yes
Can I practice at 2 AM - Yes
Did I affect my acoustic? - No

Just my 1/50 of a dollar.

Don't even think about putting that kind of garbage into your piano.  It may ruin your piano hardware, and break something in the process of installing it.  Get yourelf a electronic keyboard.  Look around on Ebay, there's plenty of used keyboards at a very reasonable prices.   :)

Oh nonsense.

The "Quiet keys" and similar devices have been around for at least 150 years; many pianos did, and still do, come with one as standard equipment. Its also how the soft pedal works on square grands.

This said, this particular brand is more expensive than most - I paid around $60 for mine, but it was a bit harder to install. The installation, once completed, I feel *MAY* be better than Quiet Keys, but as for results, they are the same.

Understand that this method of muting is only partially successful - the higher notes are totally muffled unless you really pound on them, the lower notes are louder the lower you go for the same amount of key force.

I like mine, it does what I need it to do - not drive my wife crazy when I want to play and she wants to watch TV. It also has a really nice, soft sound.
