New Student Needs Advice :)
on: September 22, 2005, 06:49:00 PM
Hi,

I have recently started piano lessons with a music teacher and he asked me to get a copy of "The Associated Board Of The Royal School Of Music, Grade 1 Piano, Scales, Arpeggios & Broken Chords".  Fine, I got a copy and i'm stuck at page the first page lol.

Page 1, shows C Major Scale, G Major Scale and the D Major Scale.  I have worked out the correct hand position etc for C Major Scale for both hands, however, on the G Major Scale, both the treble clef and the bass clef shows the sharp key symbol, but nowhere on the stave does it show me what sharp note to play.  By ear, I think it's the following keys: G, A, B, C, D, E, F#, G.  Am I Right?
Also, the D Major Scale both the treble clef and the bass clef show 2 Sharp Notes and again do not show the sharp notes on the stave.  By ear, I think it's the following keys: D, E, F#, G, A, B, C, D.  Am I Right?

Many thanx

Congratulations for starting to play the piano :)

So, your teacher told you to get the book, but did he also tell you to work through it by yourself? You should in fact work on this with him very closely. Fingering for scales is a very contentious matter. There are many different approaches, but one will only appreciate the controversy when one is already pretty advanced. In any case, you should probably not work out the fingering and movements on your own, even if there are hints in the book.

What concerns the sharps, in G major you'll notice that the sharp symbol in the key signature is on F. This means all F's in the scale/piece must be sharped. This is a very basic aspect of music. You should probably also get an introductory text on how to read music, browse the internet for such information, or work through this with your teacher.

Have fun!

Xvimbi,

Thanx for your reply.

Lol, come to think of it, the teacher only told me to get the book :)

I suppose I am jumping before I can walk here, or possibly I am showing him that I am trying - very trying lol.  I have bought three books on the piano, and currently trying to remember the position of the notes on the scales.  I am sure it will take time.

Regards
Charlie

my previous teacher charges £45 pounds per hour. my sister, who pays for it herself, pays£65  an hour from a previous concert pianist. my former teacher charged a lot but she was very good. i had to leave her though because my parents are going through a rough patch financialy and im still at school so i cant pay for themself. my new teacher charges £25 per hour. im still trying to work out if hes good or not though, ive only had one lesson.
