Need a new solo....
on: October 04, 2005, 02:29:06 AM
ok, I'm getting back into piano after about 7 years away. Before I quit, I had been taking lessons for about 7 years. The last piece that I mastered was Rachmaninoff's Polichinelle in F# minor, Op. 3 No. 4. In the past few weeks I started with Warriors song by Heller and Wedding Day At Troldhaugen by Grieg.
I need a some suggestions for works that are a little more challenging than these that I can begin working on. I am a big guy, with big hands and large fingers, so fast, technical songs have never been my strong suit (Inventions give me fits). I like grandiose style songs.
Any suggestions? I have been working out of the Applause books #2. Is there a next logical step as far as a collection?

Try some Rachmanonoff Preludes. Op.23, No.4 is nice for example. Op.32 has some really good pieces as well. Perfect for large hands.
Cheers

Maybe some Brahms intermezzo for musical development, and maybe (!) Liszt's Hungarian Rapsody no.6 for technical development
Also I think it's good to play some Scarlatti Sonatas and Schubert's Impromtus (op.90/2). If you practice rally hard, and if you really like the music, it will be no problems!
