fashion ideas you don't like
on: October 11, 2005, 05:01:36 PM
today i had to go shopping for something to wear to the helene grimaud concert.

ok.  here's a pet peeve.  pants that are wide from the hip to the floor.  they look like elephant pants.  who ever thought of that idea?

or, jackets that are as wide in the middle as the top?  what is going on here.  will we next see brown bags?

lastly, i went into a make-up store and the lady behind the counter was wearing this eyeliner like it was supposed to have no defined line.  it was just huge round smudges at the corner of her eyes.  don't people care anymore.  it's like - WHAT HAPPENED to the MIRROR?  did she put it on without looking?

and, as a ps.  what is going on with hairstyles.  i don't understand?  are they supposed to be all messy looking - so when you don't feel good - you don't look good either?  i thought you were supposed to look good when you don't feel good.

oh.  and one last idea.  don't put those stupid hip huggers in the women's section.  we want to look younger, but not that young!   there's barely a zipper in the front.  who feels comfortable going to the store that way?

Maybe she should throw away the whalebone corset and the stays and get something modern.

details not needed. fashion is crazy. i don't worry about it too much. I try to keep things simple. How simple? well it goes like this.

get up in the morning.
walk to closet.
say to self, "HHHMMM...what should I wear? oh this will do it is still clean."

LOL

I can't stand it when people let their underwear show--one thing I can't stand is when females wear a bra with a tank top that has a built in bra. If the built in support isn't enough for you, then maybe you shouldn't be wearing it in the first place...

But I don't follow the fashions either; I have my own sort of eclectic mix of vintage/modern/whatever else catches my fancy type style going that suits me really well, hahaa. And I make most of my clothes (it rulz).

i hate shopping it's boring as hell. because there's about 2 things i like and the rest is hell ugly. jeans are great, and t-shirts with funky designs on them, like mambo- mambo is the bomb!! i hate the thing with jeans now, where they make them like 2 metres long so you can to get them taken up- i feel sorry for all the short people, because my legs are quite long and still my jeans are wrapped arond my feet!

'fashion is an ugliness so intolerable it has to be changed every six months' oscar wilde- how TRUE is that

Low cut jeans.  :-X

The sheer number of teenaged girls I've seeen walking about with rolls of flab hanging over the top of their jeans is unreal. It's just horrible. I mean, it's not that they're fat (usually), it's just that squeezing yourself into clothes completely wrong for your size and shape just to try to look like everyone else is never going to do anyone any favours.
Fashion annoys me. :)

Oh, and those stoopid furry yeti-boots are pretty awful, too.

Yeah, I'm short and I don't own a single pair of trousers that aren't too long. It's not that noticeable when it's dry but it's horrible going out in the rain!

Thank you tash!  I'm short and I can never buy pants of any description in Australia, because I'm too lazy to sew and it costs a small fortune to get clothes altered there.  Thank goodness for Asian countries, where alteration in included in the purchase price!  I buy all my jeans in Hong Kong.

yeah it's all part of a scam to get some more business for sewing people (hmm i've forgotten the technical term for that...) and make you pay more for that extra chunk of material at the bottom (or replace that which used to cover your belly button). however i don't have a huge thing against low jeans, unless yes they are way too low, or they're way too tight so you get the flab line- like seriously, buy a pair of jeans that fit!

and ug boots with short skirts- that is not attractive on any level, or over jeans. my uggies stay hidden under my jeans, or trackie pants, which they're more likely to be worn with

seamstresses/tailors

 :P

Phhfftttt denim is horrible to alter anyway, you can never get the hem to look the same as the rest of the pants/skirt unless you have special equipment... so all my denims are ridiculously long, hahaa. It's okay though, sort of a 'cowgirl elf in denim' look... or something (*tries to look on the bright side* :P)

That's why you need to buy your jeans where they include the alteration!  I buy mine at specialist denim stores where they also do the alteration, so everything is the right length now.

maybe that's cheaper than the drycleaners?  i've spent a lot on my daughter's alterations at the drycleaner ($4. per pant leg) as my sewing machine is broken.  i used to sew a lot, but lost motivation.  everyone thought i was the neighborhood sewing lady and would bring me stacks of stuff to alter.  just keeping up with socks that have holes are something.  now i just throw them away when no one's looking.

Pants on women. I hate pants (or trousers as the Brits call them) and never wear them.
Is that revolutionary enough?
I love skirts and dresses and dressing femininely.
(Oh, by the way I AM a girl, phew relief, eh?...Just didn't want anyone to get the wrong idea). :)

I also hate all the make-up girls put on. less is more really. Most girls would be better off with no make-up at all. They are prettier that way to me.

Why do you say that? Would I be rather in the minority in Britain in my opinion? Certainly am used to that over here among the yanks.

Nah, I assume it's because pants in the UK tend to refer to underwear, not trousers - although more from the pov of what men wear than women.

That said, IIRC from giggling at primary school, the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory refers to trousers as pants at one point.

But it's probably less so these days, because we get so much USA language on TV etc.

We tend to have boxers or y fronts nowadays.

Pants are old fashioned.
