downhill or getting on your level?

is that even possible?

AVAST YE MATEY!

anyway, edward told me the cadenza was the most difficult part

and it certainly sounds it

in fact this cadneza sounds considerably more imposing than even the rach3 cadenzas

I LOVE this PC it is one of my favourites along with the Scriabin, Bartok 2 & 3, Vine....

Anyway, Ill get my score out and post a few more specifics...off the top of my head:

1/ If you can get hold of it, listen to the Bolet recording on Remington with the Cincinatti Symphony.  Its not on CD (I think!) only on record, it is brilliant...the first piano concerto recording i ever listened to (my music teacher LOVES Bolet!)

2/ Really think about the overall structure of the work. It is essentially four fast movements without any respite for the ears, try and milk the slower sections for all they are worth

3/ Learn the cadenza for the first movement first....you will be grateful later on I don't think its important wether or not it is harder or easier than the Rach 3 cadenza, its just bloody difficult

4/ Think a lot about the voicing, there are some big fat chords in there which can be difficult to voice (especially if you have smallish hands like me) and you don't want to lose the melody in one of these awkward places.....

good luck!!!

I've played it. It's hard, but not Rach 3 hard. The hardest part for me was actually the 2nd movement. My LH had problems keeping up.

I never had a problem with either of the cadenzas. But I've never been particularly good at fast unison playing, which doesn't bode well when you have to play that 2nd movement.

Between the cadenzas in the outer mvts and the perpetuum mobile scherzo, Proko 2 is a killer concerto which easily ranks alongside Rach3 as among the most difficult.

for some reason, to me, it still sounds harder than the rach3

does anyone have a link to some good online sheets?

i feel your pain on the 2nd movement.  That perpeteum mobile @ times i feel like it is spiralling out of control and im getting faster and faster, with the LH just falling out of synch...you can even hear it on some live recordings, or maybe I just listen for it in the hope that recoridng artists make similar mistakes to a mere mortal like myself.

Bartok #2 and Brahms #2 might be among the few standard-repertoire concerti that are clearly more difficult than Proko #2.

But for whatever reason, Prokofiev #2 is rarely performed (relatively speaking).

and i find that hialrious, because whilst i like no3 alot, no2 is on a whole new level, one of the greatest pieces ive ever heard.

Prokofiev #3 is perhaps the greatest concerto to come from Russia/Asia, and is one of the top 3 or 4 greatest piano concerti of all time.  8)

I think the first movement is a concerto by itself. The other three movements seem "tacked on". They're good, but they're not as good as the first.

While Ashkenazy-Previn is excellent, I was very impressed by Bronfman-Jarvi. I saw it two nights (the first and the last), but Bronfman was tired by the last night.
