i don't understand people who think they can sing when they obviously can't. like watching idol or something and there's all those people who've never had a singing lesson in their life and think they actually have the greatest potential to become a professional singer- how do you get that impression??!! i find it quite offensive, that people think it takes such little effort to be really good at something, like they don't even have any kind of understanding of how music works, the role of rhythm and harmony, and most importantly being IN TUNE!!
agh it's a pet hate of mine! and people who can't sing who start randomly singing to themselves on buses and in art classes- like hello we can hear you and it's hell annoying.
heh heh, agreed. I've never watched any of those idol shows, loathed 'em from the first I heard of the concept. It doesn't affect me at all, but it does bother me that some people get the idea that's what music is about - becoming a star, striking it rich and leading the good life. It's true, TV does warp peoples minds.
I don't get so much people singing out of tune, 'cept karoke which is hilarious drunken fun. What I get are people who whistle out of tune. The people who KNOW they can't sing so they figure they can get away with whistling. Ach, they'll all burn in hell, I'm sure of it.
I like to sing a lot in my car, from time to time without the recordings too see if I actually can do it

. Well I suppose playing music has given me a good ear, I think I do a decent job of keeping in tune, have heard a compliment or two. I really like the feel of the sound resonating through my body, those low notes that make the chair rumble. But no, I'm not a singer. Just for fun.
...Now to air a GRIEVANCE. Operatic singing. I try and try, I'll listen to it when it comes on the radio, to see if I will one day 'get it'. Nope, I still can't stand 90% of the stuff. I can't stand when they do vocal acrobatics, wailing all over the place, it's probably very impressive and difficult but it sounds like crap to me. Or when a singer decides she must put vibrato on EVERY SINGLE NOTE, especially runs of short notes, or a very WIDE vibrato, makes a mess of things, sounds incompetent to me.
On the flipside, I really love a pure smooth flowing vocal melody, with great resonance and not too much vibrato - just sprinkled from time to time for effect. What Bach cantatas I've heard usually feature good singing. I could listen to the soprano weave her line for hours.
