What should I do?
on: December 08, 2005, 12:25:29 AM
I have a dilemma.
I don't have access to a piano right now, since my house was on fire and as a result the piano was damaged. And I can't live in the house for a few months.
The only solution I have to this is to ask at my school to use their upright. Sounds like a good idea, except for the fact that I am not adjusted to playing with people around and don't want to embarrass myself with my profound lack of piano playing ability.
Should I ask or stay without one for a few months?

really sorry to hear about the fire and all.
what about renting one, is that possible wherever you are staying?
or if you're insured can't you look for a new piano?
or if no one is at school at night use it then?

We're renting a temporary house and the owner will not allow one.
And it's going to be a while before everything is settled with insurance so that I can get a new one.

How about getting a cheap digital (Yamaha P60, Privia PX310) ? You can also make use of it after everything is back to normal again...
I never manage to eat a whole pizza. Sigh.

I suggest using that upright at school. No only will you get your practice in without having to get a replacement, but you'll also get used to playing with others around. After a few weeks of playing in that environment, I bet you'll find your worries about embarrassing yourself vanish.

Think of it as an opportunity to get some performance practice.

wow pies, that really does suck.

Come on, there must be a piano around in a room somewhere like at a friend or relative's house you can use for a little while.  No, you will not get anything done when there are people wandering around esp when they are making noise.  You get tired of them, they get sick of you... it just doesnt work.

Spend alot of time listening to music.  When you get your house in order again, you will be ready to get back at it.  Being able to perfectly play a piece without the luxury of practicing is not like riding a bike, but starting over, that is, learning a new piece is.

How did your house get on fire?  Just wondering if it can happen to me.. :-\

Looks like I will have access to my piano. The damage is minimal; only the wood was affected by the water. Other than that, everything is fine.
I can play it in my house, albeit in a 50 degree (fahrenheit) environment in a house that smells bad and has been deemed uninhabitable by an inspector.  And I have to walk in frigid 20 degree weather to get there.
Better than nothing.  ;D
