Mentally bored from Piano
on: December 23, 2005, 04:23:43 PM
Maybe this is in the wrong place...
lol cant tell where to post things :P

Do people sometimes feel bored from the piano?
I often feel, I'm playing piano, and I get bored sometimes.

And after that, I don't really feel like doing anything...  (like my hw)

Is it cause I'm working on the same same song?  Or maybe because it's a 2 week break?

I need inspiration!........50%
I need quiet!............30%
I need motivation!........75%
Almost there...  Once I have it all, I'll be more successful in piano.  ;D

I think everyone feels the same at some point, especially when you see others acheive performances of high standards. its hard work, but the best thing is to get a few pieces together, so that when practicing on a more difficult piece you can use the others for enjoyment between pieces. just listen to lots of recordings of other pianists. inspiriation is what pushes most of us here forward. Set yourself goals and tasks. i find that i cant do a good piano practice session unless i say "i am going to learn "x" amount of bars or chords or scales from a piece or whatever". and set yourself rewards once you have completed your task, that way it makes you more determined therefore you will concentrate better.

there are many other ways to motivate oneself which i hope other people will cover.

hope this helps

working on the same piece alot can do it....but i get the feeling that you need inspiration.

like many random young pianists, you need to seek out piano recordings and videos, see whats the state of the art in piano performance, witness hamelin and libetta playing godowsky and alkan, witness horowitz and cziffra playing chopin and liszt.

thats the frightening thing ive noticed when talking to some young pianists, they practice themselves, and they have some interest, but theyve never thought to look out and see whats so great about piano playing, and why they should work hard at it.

it should never be boring once youve got enough food to chew on, your appetite needs to be healthy ;)
i never experience boredom, i only experience being overwhelmed at the mountain that lies ahead, overwhelmed....but always excited especially when i reach a new plateau.

Good post!

I'll add to go out and find live music as well. Recordings are great, and more accessible, but there's more of a charge in a live performance that just doesn't come through speakers.

Maybe I had a bad experience from performances?
My parents brought me to a piano concert.

I was very excited to see it.

But when I saw it, it was a big let down.

It bored me to death.

And it brought no inspiration.

I would like to see great piano concerts.  And I got great advice to check at my library, so I'll be doing that.

Thanks everyone for the help!  :)  Appreciated.

On the topic of performers, I think Maksim Mrvica is very inspirational to young people who play the piano. I don't know if you've seen Maksim, but he's classical crossover.

Anyway, thats my two cents. And good luck with your piano.

I checked my library and found no info for concerts...

Do those pianists play all over the country?

Like Stevie, I have very seldom known boredom. Secondary school produced it for a while until I realised that it was up to me to find food for my brain. School and other people were not going to do it for me. Once I accepted this fact the habit carried through into adult life.

It's probably not what you want to hear, but in a nutshell that is it. Nobody but you is going to do anything about it. As far as music goes specifically, perhaps you are working on too narrow a range of style. Start improvising, start composing, start playing jazz, start listening to Indian and Chinese music - anything to broaden your field.

also, like ted says, broaden what you listen to.

i loved music and everything, and loved chopin and all that, then i found this one special composer and just CLICKED - ALKAN - hes wikid

get inspired by listening to rarer stuff, the most popular pieces arent necesarily the ones youll end up liking the most....

my favourite piano work is alkan's symphony for solo piano

I ususally like improvising when I get bored practicing or learning new pieces.  Doing a short improvisation to break up the monotomy of practice is refreshing.  I usually like playing around and finding sounds that I have heard no other composer use, or contrary to that I imitate the style of a particular composer or period.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

Or maybe I don't have much to work on on my pieces...
My songs aren't too hard.

I have to try and improve my scales, and parts of music, that I've been working on for ages.
