Recital Program- Obscure composers
on: December 30, 2005, 10:24:27 PM
So I'm going to be playing a recital in April, and have decided the theme will be obscure composers. I'll be playing for a non-classical crowd, so I've tried to pick pieces that are pleasing to listen to. The program doesn't seem very creative though. Any thought or suggestions are appreciated.

Alkan- Barcarolle, Op.65
        - 3rd movement from the Symphony

Godowsky- Etude No. 5

Scriabin- 4 Preludes from Op. 11
-Vers la Flamme ( to showcase his "mystical" period)

Rzewski- Selections from the People United variations (as may as I can learn before April)

Myself- 4 Preludes Op. 1

Any ideas of pieces I could add on? I don't want to play for more than an hour.

 :)

Thats a nice programme.

I would add one of the following as reasonably forgotten romantics.

1. Thalberg-Rossini- Semirinade
2. Tausig-Weber- Invitation to the dance
3. Pabst-Tchaikovsky-Sleeping Beauty
Curator/Director
Concerto Preservation Society

Good call. That may just do it.

 8) I wish

btw why dont do complete symphony??

I suppose I could, as long as I could learn it in time. I'm in the process of learning or just finishing most of those pieces already, I guess I could try to squeeze the entire symphony in there somewhere. The fourth movement sounds wicked hard.

Godowsky etude no.5? (is that op.10 no3 from chopin LH alone??)

Yes.

Thalberg-Bellini, "Casta Diva".  It's a really nice melody.

Agreed. I also think Casta diva is quite well put together.

Re the Alkan Symphonie, I'd be very wary of the last movement (should you choose to try learning the whole piece). You're going to need both a well-developed lh octave technique and good passagework in both hands (there's some tricky bits where the lh echoes the rh passagework); and it's very easy to lose clarity under pressure and just end up making an almighty noise instead.

Some other suggestions:
Wagner-Brassin: Magic Fire-Scene
Busoni: Carmen Fantasy
Liapunov: Harpes eoliennes; Elegie en memoire de Francois Liszt (Transcendental Etudes nos 9 and 12)
Rachmaninov-Fiorentino: Vocalise

yes!  antillean dances is really cool!  and very rarely played.  i heard it on the radio awhile back.

say, besides unusual music - hardly anyone plays music for right or left hand alone.  here's unusual composer, auguste dupont, who composed fantasy and fugue op. 41 for RIGHT hand alone.

If you want LH repertoire, there's the Brahms-Bach Chaconne and the Wittgenstein-Liszt-Wagner Liesbestod (from Tristan).

Thanks pianistimo, I'll check out the Dupont. Some more one hand repertoire to go with the Godowsky etude would be neat.

I have the sheets for the Brahms, maybe I'll try. It looks fairy long and taxing though.

Indeed. I have yet to make an attempt.  :-\

RH alone? Wow, never heard about any piece like that...
