Totentanz to be hacked by figure skaters
on: January 19, 2006, 04:13:45 PM
So, according to early figure skating news, both Irina Slutskaya (Russia) and Michelle Kwan (USA) will be skating to Liszt's Totentanz at the Olympics.  <---WHY??

It's longer than their skating routines, which means they'll have to butcher it to fit the timeframe.   ARRGHGGHGH!!!  I hate when figure skaters have their music hacked & edited for their performances!!!!

Someone skated to a butchered Rach2 a while back and I wanted to cry.   :'(   Seriously, if they were fixated on Rach, why couldn't they have just skated to Rach's 23/5 instead?  Has both vibrant and dreamy sections and it clocks in ~4min, so they wouldn't have to chop at all!

I'm dreading what they'll do to Totentanz.....

If you were a figure skater, which piece of music would YOU select?

Nice one! Well, someone had to, I guess. And, on this particular occasion, you decided that it fell to you!

Can't you just imagine, though, how potential injury to the skaters might arise fom the wearing out of all the skates by the time the second part of Fugue III is reached?

So - now we have Opus Claviskatotencembatanzelisticum. At least that lends a new connotation (sorry, Aaron!) to the expression "Go figure", does it not?...

Mon Dieu!...

I.. I'm sorry, I.... couldn't make it through the whole video.  When the techno came in, I was frightened by the music to the extent that I was compelled to close the window.

I don't even know who Maksim is.  But, I am always shocked at the poor selections of music in figure skating.  I can think of such better choices.  Why not something simple, like Traumeri (I know, it's too short, and would have to be spliced into something else) or........ well, there is plenty of Chopin that would work well.  But the crap I hear.  Yikes!
Now that I think of it - wouldn't a cello work well?  Lovely.
Anyone remember that ice dancing pair that danced to Bolero several years ago?  Now, that actually worked, and was the first time I ever liked that music.

that was actually liszt's original intent with the original, it appears that maksim has faithfully recreated the feeling for our modern time. gawd bless him!  ;D

Yes, isn't it amazing how one can transform frightening images of skeletons and ghouls into other manifestations of horror? :P

I just read that Michelle Kwan will also be skating to Rach's C# minor prelude.  God help us all if it's another Maksim job....    ::)

Actually I just had a thought about this the other day.  We bash Maksim for taking the music to a different level (whatever that level may be!) and perhaps that is what the monks of the medieval era would have thought about Liszt's transformation of their Gregorian chant.

I love ice skating - it's so fun to watch.

Has anyone been watching "Dancing on Ice" recently - the new ITV show? Ii always swore i'd never get into all that reality tv crap, however this new show seems quite demanding on the contestants (even if it is a rip off of the BBC's "Strictly Come Dancing" lol!)
