Can someone reccomend a piece?
on: February 14, 2006, 01:29:28 AM
I need a new piece to work on.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  I've been playing about 2/3 years now.  The following are pieces I've already done or am working on right now:

Mussette by Bach
Toccatina by Kabalevsky
Spinning Song  by Elmenreich
Sonatina by Attwood
Arabesque by Burgumuller
Avalanche by Heller
Fur Elise by Beethoven
Solfegietto by CPE Bach
Prelude in C Minor by Chopin
Le Coucou by Daquin
Puck by Grieg
Preludio by Albeniz
Invention #4 in D Minor by JS Bach
Adagio Cantabile from Sonata Op. 13 by Beethoven

Greetings.

What kind of pieces do you like. Bach, you could look into the inventions, they are awesome. Perhaps some pieces by Beethoven. You just have to look around and decide. Nice repertoire by the way.

One of the easy Chopin prelude perhaps.  Op 28/4 E min, 28/7 in A maj, or 28/20 in C min.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

Mozart sonata in c major "one of the most popular ones" and turkish march "alla turca" are very good to get started, and are nice pieces to add to your repetoire, There are alot of bach pieces I am learning that are also useful and good pieces, Bach IS HARD though!! beware...........................

Definately Bach. I would recomend his short preludes and inventions to start with.

You play many little pieces no one really cares about.  Really, the only place where you hear most of these is at 9 yr old suzie's piano recital where they serve orange tang on a table at the back.  TANG!

I second debussy symbolism and ask what kind of pieces do you actually like?  What kind of music do you enjoy listening to?  Did you choose these pieces or was it your teacher who prescribed them for your technique?  Of the pieces you have played, which ones (if any) did you enjoy learning the most?

Maybe look at Debussy - Arabesque No. 1.  I think that's a good piece for someone who has been playing 2/3 years and wants a piece they will want to play forever.

Debussy's Arabesque, perhaps, but the main aspect is the music itself, a light and wonderfull touch. I would also have to disagree with "pieces that no one cares about" because they are wonderfull pieces and you can play whatever you like. As for pieces that advance your technique, definately Bach, Mozart, (don't forget etudes and other technical material), Schumann's album for the young such as the "From foreign lands and people" which is a wonderfull piece and teaches voicing and hand independance. Also Tchaikovsky's album for the young. I would suggest his "Playing with horses" (rought translation from russian) as a good piece to really focus on and you can practice sight reading on others(wonderfull pieces). Le Coucou is a really good piece for technique. Hope this helps. :)

For your current level:

i) Schumann's Mignon, from the Album for the Young, very pleasant to hear and play, and it will raise your current technique by doing some not difficult, new things.
ii) Scarlatti's Sonata K32, simple piece, but requires deep expressivity. Great introduction to the Scarlatti's world of about 550 sonatas.

Debussy's Arabesque is a wonderful piece, but requires polyrhythms and I consider it better for a more advanced level. Don't rush, rather be patient and enjoy the way.
