Schimmel 120i
on: February 16, 2006, 12:45:51 AM
Hello,
I have a problem :-(

My mother would like to buy a piano and since I am rather a saxophone player my knowledge regarding pianos is somehow restricted... And my mother used to play like 50 years ago... But anyhow, I spent two complete Saturdays in Piano Stores and found out that I (and she) like(s) the sound of a Kawai K25. It is not as brilliant (and maybe cold?) as an average comparable Yamaha, but very warm and lyric.
But the longer I listened to the different pianos, the more I liked the more expensive ones. The last one I heard before leaving the store (it was actually becoming dangerous...) was the Schimmel 120I. It has twice the price of the K25.

It would be nice to get some advices from experienced players: is the K25 a good choice? Is the Schimmel worth paying the difference?

Thanks,
Tobias

I'm guessing you want to use it for casual playing at home. Yes, I think it's a good choice for that purpose.

Is the Schimmel worth paying the difference?
Price-wise, it is not a big void between "K-25" and "twice the price of K-25." There are many price points in between. Go try some of those pianos in between (e.g. Kawai K-50, K-60, K-80; Yamaha U3, U5; Petrofs; Schulz-Pollmann, etc.). See if you can find something in between that you like as much as the Schimmel 120. Playing more pianos and exploring more options will help you figure out for yourself if indeed the Schimmel 120 really is worth twice the K-25 to you. It's a value judgment that only you (and your mother, I suppose, since she's the pianist) can make.

Good luck.

Hi Axtremus,
thanks for giving me some more names, that helped. Now it's my mothers' turn  ;). But I think it will last a few days/ weeks more before the final decision could be felt...

One thing I like about the Schimmel is that the claviature is a little bit higher than usual (at least compared to the japanese models which seem to be designed for japanese people only).

Best Regards,
Tobias

PS: saw your piano reviews: congratulation, you have the knowledge

The piano might be the single most expensive item one would buy to put in a house. Please take your time to find one that's right for your family. There usually is no good reason to rush when shopping for a piano. Good luck. :)
