G T A San Andreas
on: February 19, 2006, 10:42:22 AM
I have spent many a Sunday morning playing this great game, wandering around stealing cars and cutting people up with chainsaws.

Do you think that some video games make people more agressive?

There was an article in the papers last week about a young kid, who after playing this game, shot his friend in the face.

Discuss please.

PS If anything, Tiger Woods 2005 makes me more agressive.

i have mixed feelings.  on the one hand, practice makes perfect.  on the other hand, you  don't want them (your children) practicing on a real live person.  my son used to play grand auto theft too.  when i first saw the title - i though, 'no way am i buying such in impotent game.'  but, then he talked his father into it.  so if i threw it in the trash, he would hate me forever.  so i decided to just let him play it and get tired of it.  how many times can you steal a car before the thrill is gone and you need something more like a chainsaw?

this gets back to the food they serve in the lunchroom and the stories in 'captain underpants.'  (unfulfilled fantasies are given to the lunchroom ladies)  you can create you own cartoon (with your teachers names filled in) and captions according to your liking here:
www.scholastic.com/captainunderpants/comic.htm  click on 'action' and then 'start' to create your cartoon.

ps my son's on the battlefield now with 'battlefield.'  he likes crashing helicopters for free.

Only stupid people and/or people with pre-existing disorders could possibly be affected by a videogame. They most likely would grow up to be psychos anyway. I was gonna buy this many months back but they took it off the shelves because of the hidden sex missions. Do you know if it's back out for PC? BTW, Tiger Woods 05 is da sheet

agreed about the hidden stuff.  the games themselves are probably a way for guys to vent.  my son doesn't seem the violent type either, although i do think parents should discuss what is not acceptable behavior.

guys miss out on a lot when they are growing up.  if we had shooting ranges that were available - like in boy scouts - they could actually learn to do this stuff for real (not shoot people - but know how to properly use a gun) and not be bored at home.  am thinking about signing my son up with a sporting goods store that advertises some shooting range instruction.

also, i think guys need to know survival skills.  it's really crazy to learn everything from video games.  you don't really know what's fantasy and reality until you try what they make look real.  guys like solving problems, being creative, being outdoors (i thinK), and being strong and healthy and not shrivelled up from staying inside too long.  this comes from putting them to work before they play the video games.

one of my girlfriends has about 6 children now.  they have been in 4-H instead of boy scouts and also go on shooting ranges.  they do projects.  and much like the 2 day camping excursion our kids public school just had, they learn to use the GPS system.  here is a site where they explain it more.  kids seem to like learning real live things, too, if adults take the time to teach them.

www.4-h.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=101&Itemid=75ZZ

there are so many kids that need something to do after school.  usually around 4th or 5th grade they need somebody to introduce them to getting a library card at the local library.  that'll keep them out of trouble for a while.

and, with many kids (boys esp) they sort of need some fun along with afternoon homework.  sort of an alternation between homework, fun, homework, fun.  tutoring is a cool thing because you can help kids do something fun and do homework.  if they are not closely monitored, they'll just do the fun stuff and get really behind on the homework.

what i've learned as a parent is that when you eat meals together, use the napkins to write on.  ask them spellings/meanings of words.  math problems.  science questions.  just one at a time per meal.  you can get ideas from the short books found at continental press.  my son got kinda behind in his math computational skills and so i don't assume anything anymore (like homework is automatically being understood).  to me, this is more important than video games, but the video games are one reward.

you've got her around your little finger.  my son gets away with murder.  i had to beg him to quit playing battlefield like i was his little sister.  how humiliating.  i've created a monster.  i grabbed the mouse, then the cordless joystick, and then as the ultimate revenge - the whole keyboard.  he still wouldn't give me the chair.  i told him i'd pay a mob boss to beat him up.  still wouldn't budge.  finally, i called his father (it's the only thing that works around here).

most days he's really sweet. today he's crazy.  just play games, eat, play games.  iwant some WORK done around here.  but, of course, i'm just his mother.  when will i get some respect?

You should have beat him more when he was younger.

Thankfully, my mummy no longer censors my entertainment.

But she did ask me to put all my porn vids upstairs, which i thought was a bit harsh.

yes.  i do admit that i spoiled him.  he was the first one.  the second one has a grudge because she sees what he got away with.  the third one gets away with a lot again -simply because i can't catch her.

you can't win with children.  either you're too nice, or too hard, or something.  both my husband and i grew up when we couldn't sass our parents.  if we did, there was trouble heading our way.  i take comfort that even donald trump (on interview last night) uses a raised voice to correct his children.

spending enough time with them does make a difference, though, i've noticed.

i played that game only to cruise on the highway with a nice harley. the missions are crap. a few years ago when i had the forerunner of san andreas and i let a 7 year old boy playing the game, i though it is probably to early. godmode and infinity ammo isnt a good thing to grow up with, especially when he always shouted "GOTCHAAA!!!!111 after he had kicked some ass on the rampage  :P. but he is crazy anyway... you cant blame it on the game  :P :P

It is not that hard to control your children. Think about what they need from you and then threaten to restrict whatever you provide. Ex. Don't give them any money for a couple months, keep them inside the house for a month, etc. It is not hard to control them. You can also take away the computer and the internet and the cable and the tv, etc.

After loosing several times in MVC2 Ah jumped on my bro and twisted his man boob.

However, ah cannot recall a time when ah attempted to hit him with a hadoken or performed a 127 hit combo on his lifeless body.

Now the question: If ah could throw hadokens would ah throw them at people because of video games.

The answer: No. Ahd throw them at people regardless (come on, what else would it be good for)

But why am Ah not throwing hadokens: because ah have no access to this ability (dam them and their secrets)

So then:

Could the reason the kid shot his friend in the face simply be because he had access to a gun?

Ah think so.

Its kind of like suicide or...murder. If a person's gonna do it, their gonna do it. Unless his friend was sleeping with his San Andreas behing his back, the blame is completely on the kid.

Also: Last week Ah played Halo 2 online. Ah then proceeded to murder innocent goats to protect the world from future threats.

Hey thats so weird, Iv just been playing Street Fighter for the first time it YEARS. I wasnt sure my Ken technique was going to transfer well onto the PC pad, but never fear as the ole boy has still got it  ;D

Only problem is, I tried to 'spinning bird kick' my piano into sounding good and broke my leg - hence proving that games do indeed make you more violent (and stupid)  :o

Mate I have no clue! Im thinking it may make more sense in Japanese than in English.

Which begs the question I guess 'what does HADDDUUUKKEENNN mean?'

Tell you something funny though...

I was trying to explain to my old man about how Ryu has become like a cultural icon among my generation. He didnt believe me, but I told to ask ANY guy my age what a 'haduken' is and I guarentee he'll know.

We got onto the subject when I told him that I needed arms like Dhalsim to reach this window, and he had no clue what I meant. I was like 'you know Dhalsim, yoga fire and all that jazz'.

The conclusion was drawn that post war baby boom generation just do NOT get the youth of today. Or ex youth I should say (at 24 Im practically Steptoe!) ;D

There was an article in the papers last week about a young kid, who after playing this game, shot his friend in the face.

I doubt it, but then I've had no experience with guns. I'm reading the story and my initial reaction is "He had a gun?!?!" rather than anything to do with a game triggering any response. But that's cultural I guess. It's a constitutional right to get shot in the face at close range isn't it? Then take the family to watch the guy eat a McDonalds and get electrocuted ;D

But even with my lack of knowledge, I suspect that firing a gun is nothing like wiggling a mouse.

Unless the army all bunny hop wildly about straffing to dodge bullets and blame "lag" when they get shot?  That's it, what about the Army...<enter Graham Chapman> "Mr Smith writes, Do you think joining the army makes people aggressive?...well Mr Smith, I bloody well hope so ..and now for something completely different..."

If not, quake 3 and so on are probably fairly safe from the pov of turning people into leet killing machines.
