Do you count it as a download if the download was completly legal, such as someone uploading some modern music in the audition room, then you downloading it? PianoStreet has a permit for that stuff, I think.

Well I download almost everything, or stream it on Rhapsody which is legal.  Pretty much the only music I BUY is rare modern stuff that nobody seems to have like Ferneyhough or Finnissy or something.

honestly, I buy way waaaaaaaay more than I download... I am a book freak (piano sheets :D) but I don't even know how to play most of the things I buy... xD
That's the price you pay for being moderate in everything.  See, if I were you, my name would be Ilovepie.  But that's just me.

I buy most everything I have. I usually download it first to see if I like it and then buy it.

It depends on the circumstances.

If the piece is
1. published and in print, I buy it
2. published but out of print but the publisher or its successor exists and can supply it, I buy it
3. published but out of print and the publisher does not exist and has no successor, I download it if it is available for download or photocopy it if I can source a hard copy
4. published but out of print and the publisher or its successor can supply it but fails refuses to do so, I make a certain number of written efforts to obtain permission to download or photocopy it and will do whichever is the most convenient if the publisher still fails to respond
5. unpublished and in the public domain, I download it if possible or, failing that, photocopy it
6. unpublished but in copyright, I try to buy it from the copyright owner/s or, failing that as a possibility, I try to seek their permission to download or photocopy it.

Sometimes i will use e mule as a kind of try before you buy service.

I try not infringe copyrights, apart from Sorabji, because i don't think that anyone would want to waste their money on it ;D

OK - so let's try to examine what you mean here. Is it that you try not to infringe copyrights other than Sorabji's because only what is available under his copyright is worth "wasting" (aka speding) money on? Or is it that you don't think anyone would waste money on Sorabji? Or what? No offence intended, of course; just that a little clarification would perhaps not come amiss...

Forgive me, I am an idiot.

I only wrote that to provoke a response.

I is coming to Bath in May. If you are in, I will buy you a couple of beers.

OK - let's take your various points in the order in which you wrote them.

If you are an idiot but prepared to admit to being so, why would I need to forgive you? I suspect, however, that you are no such thing, but I also suspect that this fact, too, suggests that there is no need for forgiveness here. If you wrote what you did to provoke a response and you got one - which you did - then any "idiocy" on your part is very much in question, I think; whilst provocative desires may not necessarily be incompatible with idiocy, they are certainly not by definition indicative of it. I will be in Bath on certain days of May this year but away on others (dates of absence thereform and presence therein yet to be ascertained) and I appreciate your kind offer of those "couple of beers" but, without wishing to appear ungracious in the face of your kind offer, I would have to let you down over that particular beverage, since I am allergic to beer in any form and from any country - I am not, however, a teetoller, so I imagine that finding a suitable alternative liquid would not be unduly difficult to achieve, if you will forgive me for so saying...

I have been giving in and d/l more and more content, but of course it is all from 100% legal sources and methods. The only scary thing is that if you lose it or something, how do you get it again? Then again, if you lose a CD, you lose it for real, too, so I guess there is no difference, really.

Through the fair use act, you can always make copies for your own personal use, which I do often in case something does happen.

what legal ways?

Depends what you download. Some examples:

Music: iTunes, Napster
Movies: Vogos
Games: Steam

Of course, legal = pay :P.

When I was younger and had no job, prolly 'bout 93% download ;). Copyright or not, I didn't care, I wanted the hear the music. Discovered a lot of music that way.

Since getting a job and regular income, I always purchase. Mostly, because I can. Also: computers piss me off, liner notes, uncompressed, and I like to think of my purchase as a little vote saying "I dig this stuff, keep it coming"... I'll still DL the odd tune for sampling purposes or if a friend wants to jam out a tune from a disk I wouldn't buy.

After having a few favorite disks stolen from my vehicle one night, I now try to keep my 'hardcopies' safe at home. Instead, put music on a MD or burnt CD for travelling.

I download a good amount of sheet music. Same thing; if I like the piece I'll go out and buy a good edition. Free sheetmusic isn't always trustworthy.
