Handel Suite no3 Dmin
on: March 08, 2006, 12:51:05 PM
Hi guys Im considering learning this piece.  Have any of you played it?  Your thoughts and experiences are most welcomed. Also if any of you have played it for an examination can you give some indication as to its approximate level of difficulty.

Thanks thalbergmad! There must be at least ONE Handel specialist on the forum somewhere although it is lamentable how few people take the trouble to learn Handel in favour of Bach.  I have to say I dont know nearly as much Handel as i do Bach which is one reason why i looking into this piece in the first place.  I found a competitor playing it at the www.e-pianocompetition page mp3 section.  I think she plays it quite sensitively - certaily with a lot of style.  But like I say im no Handel expert. See what you think. ;D

I am not too sure which suite that is...  There is like 4 Handel suites in d minor.

I know I played one of them, but I have no idea which number it was (ashamed I am).  It finished with a varied aria.

Having just bought the Richter/Gavrilov CD of the suites (vol. 1), I can tell you that it's the longest and has the most movements (I think).
And from the programm notes, Handel's suites are considerably different from Bach's.  He doesn't always stick to the prelude, allemande, courante, sarabande, Gigues thing,  His fugues occassionally gain a voice and drop it when it's no longer needed.  There more of an improvisatory character.
That probably doesn't help - but hey, it's a post ::)
Never look at the trombones. You'll only encourage them.

hahahahahahah yeah, it's the one I played.

It's not an easy piece.  Last mvt is fun (fortunately it lasts for about half the whole suite).  Let's say it's a good piece for students that try to avoid playing Bach.   ;)
