Google Censorship
on: March 12, 2006, 10:21:43 AM
I just found out that I satire site that I check from time to time has been removed from Google.  Now, according to the Google search the site doesn't exist.  The website is www.thepeoplescube.com  It basically satirizes by writing in the overblown style of communist propaganda.  It may not be at the level of the Onion, but it's still pretty funny.  After Google agreed to censor its results in China in exchange for access, the People's Cube responded with this.

Now a few weeks later the site seems to be completely removed from Google.  A search for 'the peoples cube' will turn up pages that link to the site but not the site itself.  Furthermore, if you try to search for web pages inside the site, Google tells you it does not exist.  The Cube posted their response to this here.

I can think of no reason that Google removed the site other than that it criticized Google.  This runs against their stated policy

Does Google censor search results?

It is Google's policy not to censor search results. However, in response to local laws, regulations, or policies, we may do so. When we remove search results for these reasons, we display a notice on our search results pages. Please note: For some older removals (before March 2005), we may not show a notice at this time.

Out of curiousity I googled 'Stormfront' (a white supremacist web site) and it appeared first in the search.  This should prove that Google won't censor results for political reasons, but they will censor you for criticizing them.  Amazing that a company who's motto is 'Do no evil" is so damn evil.

.. is worth reading from time to time https://www.google-watch.org/

The volume of user data being accumulated by it, no doubt both being and ready to be fed to various Big Brothers, is very disturbing.

At least that explains your obsession with communism.

Well, I have been thinking about boycotting google since this is getting absurd. But there just isn't a good alternative.

Just another sign about the 'evilness' of corporations :)

I must say I find the site a bit scary myself. It seems that the satire is an excuse for the crude underlying ideology. Satire weakens itself when it limits itself to a partucular 'victim'. Granted some of the stuff is pretty funny but I think this does compromise the quality of the satire. Furthermore there is so much stuff on that site, it takes itself way too seriously.

Now Prometheus, I was obsessed with communism long before I read anything there. ;D  I'd agree with you that the site does get over-ideological.  That's what I love so much about the Onion.  It does such a good job of making fun of everyone that you can read something that totally mocks your beliefs and still think it hilarious.
