A new program
on: March 23, 2006, 08:18:15 PM
okay..time to select a new program to work on ..But i have a problem of Plenty!! Too many pieces to choose from...so, would like to know about your choice from the following pool of pieces: (a program around 70 mins would be just right!)
Bach: Toccatas BWV 913 (d minor) and 914 ( e minor)
Mozart: K. 330.
Beethoven: Sonata op. 31-1, op. 57, op. 109 (the barenboim masterclass seems to have influenced me!)
Chopin: Sonatas 2, 3
           : Preludes op. 28 (all)
Schumann: Papillons
Liszt: Rhapsody Espagnole
Mussourgsky: Pictures at an exhibition
Brahms: Ballades op. 10
Prokofiev: Sonatas no. 2, 3

Right now, I'm inclined towards doing:
Bach: BWV 914 (e minor)
Mozart: K 330
Schumann: Papillons
Mussourgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition
Prokofiev: Sonata no. 3

However, I find it a real pain, NOT to do any of the Beethoven and Chopin !! What would you do if you were me !

I would ask Barenboim for some advice.

Welcome to the pianist's fate; so much music, so little time....

Let's see, here's what I wwould pick, and why.... oh how much time do you have to prepare this program? Oh well I will exclude that factor...

Bach Toccata in d minor BWV 913 (already played the other one)

Beethoven Op. 31 #1 (it's cool and underplayed)

*******************

Chopin Preludes (they are on my to do list)

If you do the Mussorgsky don't put anything after it, it would be anticlimactic. By all means play something before it, I always do; the Papillons work well for a pre-"Pictures" overture; they are the same type of composition (free form suite of "portrait" miniatures) and they will brace you for the Pictures. I always play a group or pair of short pieces before Pictures. One time it was Granada and Astirias from Albeniz' "Suite Espanola" last time it was Arensky's  ;D Romance in F major op. 38 #?  and Medtner's Fairy Tale in f minor op.26 #3. If you play one of the Chopin Sonatas you may want to play some shorter Chopin pieces as an overture for the Sonata. Chopin's Preludes should stand alone IMO. Oh well you'll figure out what to play....

i'd come to hear just the chopin preludes (as a complete set).  would be very cool!  i hadn't heard at least half of them before attempting to sightread through all of them.  some are just as challenging musically as the etudes are technically.  to bring out that tenor voice that is a constant in chopin's music.  and the passion and love in the preludes.

Pictures at an exhibition is a great piece to do, good for technique as well, and great music
