recommendations for a nice, long, showy piece
on: April 10, 2006, 03:57:32 AM
I'll be giving my junior recital next year and I'm only a week away from my teacher assigning me repertoire. He takes requests, so I need some help finding a really "showy off" piece. I'd prefer it be from the Romantic, Classical, or Baroque eras. To give you an idea of my skill level, I'm currently playing Ravel's Jeux D'eau, Saint Saens Piano Concerto 2, etc. I love melodic, lyrical pieces. I'm thinking something to make the audience cry at the end ;)
P.S. I know some of you are pissed because this topic has been posted probably 1000 times, but ... <smiles like a little girl> I'd appreciate your patience.

For showy and long, look no further than the Thalberg-Bellini - Sonnambula.

The Dante Sonata is NOT a showpiece, if you even want to present it as one, don't bother with learning it.

Brahms Op. 5.

Yeah it's a long one,  but definitely worth it.  EVERY emotion I can imagine is presented throughout this piece, I adore the second movement especially.  Each movement individually is easier than your rep, so the question is endurance.  If you can do it, they will love you.

Agreed, but it's not a piece with fancy octaves for "getting the crowd going" imo.

Liszt's Les cloches de Geneve. Not too long though. 7 minutes

Extremely beautiful piece. With a full-blooded climax which is definitly showy. If you play it well, it won't just be the end that make the audience cry; You'll have them weeping through the entire piece. I'm sure you'll like that  ;D

Alkan, symphonic concerto.

Listz, sonata in B minor.

Or Chopin sonata in B minor, variations base on Don Giovanni theme.

Ravel's, Garpard de la nuit.

Islamey.

How about horowitz's arrg on Carmen theme.

Some Debussy's etude (listen to Uchida's recording, blow your mind away).

Bach-Busoni??

Scarlatti's sonatas.
