College Audition Rep

My teacher and I have finally settled on my college audition rep for the fall. Tell me what you think...

Bach: Prelude and Fugue in g minor (WTC Bk I)
Beethoven: Sonata in E Major, Opus 109
Chopin: Scherzo in b-flat minor
Chopin: Etude in e minor, Opus 25 No. 5
Debussy: Ondine (Preludes Bk II)

I may use Liszt's Un Sospiro for my etude requirement instead of the chopet. It depends on whether or not I have time to learn both (I'm in a Chopin competition in the fall that requires a chopet, so I need to learn 25/5 anyways).

sounds good.  If you can do bothe the chopin and the liszt that would be best and swap them at each audition - helps to keep the programme sounding fresh!

All your pieces are good (especially the Beethoven).

The Scherzo is a little overplayed, though.

I hope to audition to as many schools as I possibly can. I'm definitely applying to Julliard, Eastman, New England, and Peabody just to see if I can get in and I know that Ithaca College is my safety. The reason I chose those 4 even though I'm not sure I can get in is because they all have cross-registration with a high-power university, which I'm fairly confident I could get into, and my parents insist I get dual degrees.

As for the Scherzo being overplayed, I know. I asked my teacher if I could drop it and play the E Major Scherzo instead, but he said that I didn't have enough time to polish the E Major as well as I can the b-flat minor and that the scope and difficulty of my other rep will cover the fact that it's overplayed. He said that Beethoven Opus 109, Chopin 25/5, and Debussey's Ondine will be original enough and all very impressive. Still...

I don't think I wanna leave the US in undergrad. Maybe for grad school or definitely if I take time between undergrad and graduate work, though. I was actually thinking Vienna instead of the UK, though.

My teacher just added two more Debussey pieces: La Terrace and Fireworks. Yay or nay?

Also, which etude should I use? I'm starting to think Un Sospiro might be too easy/overplayed.

i'd take out the scherzo and replace it with a contemporary composer (since you have Debussy as your impressionist composer...) or maybe something more sinister / loud / crashing to give nice contrast with the rest of your pieces....

...er...others...that i can't think of right now...

the tausig and bolcom aren't used that often in auditions...might be worth considering...

All the rep sounds great - have you considered applying to the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music?  On faculty are Menahem Pressler, Andre Watts, Arnaldo Cohen, Emile Naoumoff, Luba Edlina-Dubinsky, Evelyne Brancart, and 5 or 6 others.

The Scherzo isn't impressionistic. It's my major romantic piece requirement. Funny though, because my teacher recommended Prokofiev's 3rd for my 20th century requirement, but we later decided on a group of Preludes instead.
