What do you think of asians?
on: May 09, 2006, 09:49:24 AM
I'm not racist or anything, but there was one day where I was playing an online game with someone. He thought I was from america. When I told him I'm from singapore, he asked why - whether I migrated there or if I'm there on a holiday. I told him I live in singapore, and its my homeland. Then, he asked why I speak such fluent english...

So after I heard this, I wondered what others thought too, which is the reason for this poll. Okay the poll subject might be a little too irrelevant, but your participation is greatly appreciated.  ;)

English is the most universal language, and for that I'm lucky because my foreign languages (what I know of French and German) suck, and in most - if not all - countries I can get by with English and hefty hand signals.

But asians, I have nothing against them. But what I'm still fuzzy about is what countries do you include in the generalisation of being asian?

It's funny how people think if they wave their arms around and talk louder and slower people will understand them. :D

As to the original question, I'm not really sure what you mean .... I personally don't care whether someone's from Pluto as long as they're not a horrible person. I used to work in a shop where everytime an Asian customer came in two of the people I worked with would start saying the shop smelled like curry. I refused to talk to them when they started being such idiots. That sort of attitude really annoys me. But I think they were just being immature and petty rather than actually racist because they were perfectly nice to them if they had to help them or serve them at the till. Still, it was a stupid and unnecessary thing to say.

That's just immature behaviour really, just trying to get a laugh out of anything. I guess they kept doing it because it got a laugh the first time, and they seem pretty conservative about it.

Funny story: Me and my dad, brother and sister went to Portugal last summer for a cousin's wedding, and when we arrived at the first hotel we were to stay at, which had AWESOME puff pastry custard tarts....ooooo three of them for breakfast mmmmmmm....ahem. Anyway, when we arrived there, my dad was sorting out everything that needed to be sorted out with the front receptionist, and he was talking slower and a bit more exaggerated to make it easier to understand. What he didn't realise though was that HE WAS TALKING IN A JAMAICAN ACCENT!!! Man it was hilarious, the look on the poor girls face! Ooh it was priceless I tell thee.....priceless...

asian babies and children are so cute. they're very pretty.
my friend used to think it was goodluck to touch an asian childs head, so inevitably he'd scramble towards every asian child that walked past to pat them on the head ;D ::).
asian people in my country are very polite and nice people.
they're also very hard working and as a result very smart.

Not necessarily. Anyway, the comments Henrah and I made didn't generalise at all, either positively or negatively. And pointless it may be, but have you seen the rest of the Anything But Piano forum recently? Maybe we should lock them all...

Indeed. Bandwidth is not infinite. Soon the administrators will have to start deleting posts and topics. Desicions will have to be made.

Any opinion, positive or negative, must be a racist one.

Every time someone makes a comment about piano players, nerds, thieves, certain cliques, etc., they are making a generalization. If I were you, I wouldn't be so quick to call racism. In my view, racism only applies if someone is discriminating against or speaking negatively about an entire group of people.

But anyway, in my limited experience with them here in the United States, Asians seem to be hard-working and nice people. I like them.

They always win the piano competitions, damn those asians....
Well, they do but I enjoy listening to them.

You notice how rare it is for a 5 year white kid prodigy but asian ones could just about swarm you? At least that's how it is where I live how about everyone else?

Also, I have learned never get into an elevator when a japanese tour bus has just gotten in and they want into that elevator, I take the stairs and I attribute it to saving my live.

these are generalisations, nothing more, nothing less...

It's cultural. We have just as many child prodigies as Asians do, but Asian prodigies take on classical instruments such as violins and pianos. We take on guitars and drums.

I hate the generalisation that every asian can do martial arts. I have heard sooo many people say to random asians (I assumed they didn't know them as I see them going up to them in a seemingly didn't-know-you-before way) on the street "Hey, you, do some kung-fu!" I would laugh my head off if someone did that and they actually knew kung-fu, and knocked them out in one punch/kick for being so insolent and actually having the nerve to discriminate on a generalisation like that (rather than just prejudice, which isn't too bad as you only think it and never act it out).

although im a halfer myself, I must say that currently I am not a fan of asians.

at university, they are really smart and raise the bell curve so it's impossible to get an A.  plus the only reason why theyre so smart is because of the super-parents

also because theyre so smart, the uni blindly hires them to be TAs.  the problem is that they cant speak engrish yet so my marks suffer.  As was discussed in another thread, yes, this is the university's fault for hiring teachers that cant speak english, but still.  >:(

they also form big groups in the library.  They also ignore or cant read the signs that say 'dont $%^ing eat in here', turning it into their own little dim sum.

Meanwhile, the rest of us have to deal with the distracting food smell and the talking.  not to mention how asians have a way of speaking really LOUD when they talk their own dialect.

ok, I admit that the problems I describe more refer to culture differences and immigration, rather than actual asians.

"I'm just saying that when we die, there's gonna be a planet for the French, a planet for the Chinese, and we'll all be a lot happier."

I almost agree with barney, but then I realize that I wouldnt exist if this were the case.  oooooo complicated

-now the other side of the spectrum-
i also work at sears, and to complicate my opinion even further, I say that I would rather sell something to a polite asian family than to lowbrow joe who wont give me a break when I tell him it's not my fault for not having their thing in stock.  So I do like how asians are polite and personal honor is a big thing with them

in other words,
vs.

so where am I on the spectrum then?  I don't know.. I think it could have changed while I typed this post here..  but it's complicated, no doubt about that.

basically they are hard working because their strict parents pound discipline into their heads at a very young age (im sure some of you asians can identify with this). perhaps more cultures and societies should learn from the asian disciplinary techniques.

Asians are ok.  Most of the Asian kids I knew in high school were rather cliquish and fit the stereotype of having parents who drove them hard.  Many would be grounded for a B.

Donjuan, you are so right about TA's.  Luckily, now that I got my basic sciences and maths done and am taking a bunch of engineering classes, most of my TA's speak great English.

until you break down which particular Asians, i cant really comment. the word "Asians" is too vague. i see a lot of difference between e.g. Indians and Vietnamese people. The Orients, i find very hard working, honest, respectable, cultural. Indians (especially indian buisness men) can be very arrogant, rude and pushy. so, i dont know.

since you are from Singapore, what i like/dislike about singapore:

They dont smell

They have clean streets

Polite

Respectable

not many dislikes though, i dont really know any peeps from singapore personally.

that's also true; like right now, I am playing at my city's music festival, and we keep getting these asian girls, all with the same hair cut, and playing either a) fantasy Impromptu or b) Schubert's Impromptu Op. 90 No. 4 or c) Schumann's Aufschwung --> all overplayed; seriously, I don't know why they bother

Of course, they have grown up asians beating them at home and at lessons, so they have impeccable technique.  But to watch them play - it's like watching someone do Mavis Beacon typing exercises!  and then when they are trying to be emotional, it is a kind of 'uniform' application they make to the music (like Lang Lang  :P) that actually means nothing to the music itself; they appear to do it artificially.

Im speaking in general anyway. asians--> Yes, very robotic.  I think Russians and other Europeans make for better pianists, generally.

(I say 'in general' here based on what I see, ok?)

yeah, i voted other simply because I try not to think anything of them, just like i'd think nothing of whites, blacks etc.  Of course, you notice they're asian, but that means nothing.

Of course, it is different for me in piano competitions... they simply are too good technically.  While I agree with the above poster that a lot of them don't play terribly interestingly, there are also quite a few white pianists who do too, they just don't play as flawlessly!  Of course, I've heard exciting performances from asians, with one of my favourites being Yundi Li.

Of course, I'm mainly speaking in sour grapes, since the two who beat me in a piano competition last weekend were asian, and though they did play better than me, I did not really enjoy their performances (though probably because I was going 's**t, i'm screwed')

But yes, if I met an asian walking down the street, I would just treat them the way I treat anyone else

like every other race, some asians are fab and some are absolute morons. and i like the fab ones, i'm good friends with many of them. and i like the fact that they work their butts off, at least they're making a substantial effort, thus they deserve (like in every other race) the good results they get. wouldn't mind marrying an asian guy, as i have mentioned like 50 times on this forum already, we'd have smart good-looking children hahaha

Let's not forget another big stereotype... asians can't drive (at least in the US).

I mean seriously, I can't count the number of times I've met another car head-on in a parking lot that was going the wrong way, only to find the driver was asian...  Do they not have driver's ed over there? ::)

I've always found asians to be hard-working and friendly, however, and many of my close friends are asian.

Although I have quite a few Asian friends from various countries, Filipinos are the only ones I have had any in depth association with. It sounds silly to say I don't get on with most Filipinos, because I have been married to a Filipina for twenty-six years. In general, however, I have found the outlook of Filipinos very difficult to understand. Fortunately, my wife was as much of an anachronism in her own society as I was in mine and so, to that extent, we have probably been able to fare much better than most similar couples.

One can hardly fail to be impressed by their warmth, hospitality, ability to be happy with very little, loyalty to family (which admittedly can be a double-edged sword) and gloriously romantic disposition. The counter to this is that anything involving discipline, reason or cause and effect is likely to be a complete waste of time. From their point of view, I usually appear as a hard-headed, shockingly irreligious, pathologically independent thinker whose motives are sometimes cold and unfathomable.

The popular classification of "lazy" is too much of a generalisation. Among our relations there exist some who have worked themselves into the ground in a way we in the West would fail to cope with, to see their children become doctors, lawyers, professors and generally do well. Unfortunately, these few will probably end up with the moral burden of supporting twenty dozen layabouts.

So it's all very complicated, even after much interaction and experience. I know too little about other Asian countries to comment sensibly about their people.

Asian guys are hawt.  They're good poker players but for some reason they suck at chess.  Their penises are usually small, but they make up for it with their smooth and sleek bodies (unless they're fat AKA Korean).  Vietnamese have cute ears and Japanese have cool hair, especially when it's dyed hot pink.  The yellower (Chinese) seem smarter than the brownish ones (Malaysian/Thai), so I assume melatonin has something to do with math.  They're all really bad kissers in my experience.  Jie Chen is a jerk/lesbian and the Japanese pop idol Aoi is one of the hottest crossdressers in the world, so I believe Japanese musicians are nicer than Chinese ones.  Asians always want to randomly make themselves seem smarter to their white friends, and they usually are because most white people are fat like Koreans and lazy like Taiwanese.  Asians are randomly super insecure because they know they're just note machines and usually take second to Russians and Americans in competitions, with the exception of Joyce Yang and Yundi Li, who respectively still takes second to Russians because she plays too much modern and no longer competes.  Asians can't spell "soliloquy" or "daiquiri" because they tested out of English Composition 101 so they could get into Engineering School quicker.  Yaoi (Gay Hentai) makes my pants tighter, and Asians in general can pull off sunglasses better than any other people.

So, Asian guys are hawt and Jie Chen sucks (not penis because she's a lesbian).

Jie Chen sucks (not penis because she's a lesbian).

Any proof of that?

Photos would make great evidence...teeheehee

Although I have quite a few Asian friends from various countries, Filipinos are the only ones I have had any in depth association with. It sounds silly to say I don't get on with most Filipinos, because I have been married to a Filipina for twenty-six years. In general, however, I have found the outlook of Filipinos very difficult to understand. Fortunately, my wife was as much of an anachronism in her own society as I was in mine and so, to that extent, we have probably been able to fare much better than most similar couples.

I'm Asian.
Ethnic Chinese from Hong Kong.

Why? Any difference?
If there is any difference other than skin colour, hair colour, eye colour and body built, its the looks. Asians look at least 10 - even 15 - years younger than their western counterparts of the same age.
