conscious thought goes into it. maybe with jazz you ahve more of the subconscious. i'm into beethoven mucho much - and i always hear this sort of 'working out' of an idea. you start with this idea and then you ponder it this way and that way - and come to some kind of formalized plan. of course, even in the midst of all this, beethoven and other composers nix an idea occasionally after a short space - and start with something completely new. this shows willingness to be flexible.
i like to see symmetry in motion. it's like you see the form ABA or ABBA or whatever and then it's manipulated into something 'not quite' as with the latter sonatas of beethoven , much of hayden, and definately schuberts 'wanderings.' the singing 'soul' as one might say. much like a bird that has a definate call - but on occasion 'wings it' out of sheer passion.
also, the poetry in life and music seems to be important. if you can't appreciate poetry - music is sort of blah. but, you see the rhythms in words and the rhythms start making sense musically just as the spoken word (accents and all). i feel many times the music of beethoven is misunderstood. we don't 'yell' words at people...so his sudden sfz or sf's are not to be taken as literally as some do. it's more an exclaimation - not a shout in the ear - although i'm sure that beethoven surely was needing to hear himself play his own piano and occasionally was frustrated and could listen to those notes played a little louder. but, for us - who can hear - why bother someone with INTENSE sound. you can refine and refine - until you have a pleasing tone in sfz as well as ppp. to me this is similar to a refined speaker - they never jar you and sort of bring you into a world of pallettes and tones within a set speaking range that is varied within these boundaries.
btw, i still like jazz, too. i think it's whatever you're in the mood to listen to. i find jazz more appealing in the evening when one is too tired to think and want to just enjoy the sounds for sound sake and not form.
