Great deal on CDs
on: May 25, 2006, 05:59:00 PM
for anyone who's interested, I was in London about 2 weeks back and went to the HMV store's classical section and there were heaps of CDs being sold at discount prices or half price. for example, i got a five CD pack of Cziffra Liszt  recordings for 10 pounds, which would be about $18.that's one of the best deals i've ever got for CDs. and they've got one of the best collections i've seen. it's worth having a look.

no one, i think they were quite glad to see me ;D london is quite civilised, except for the fact that every dashed thing closes at 5 pm. i went to westminster abbey, it was closed, i went to the tower that was closed, i went to the tate modern and found out that the nice things had NOT been shifted from the old tate, so we went hunting for that walking up and down the embankment in pouring rain. but PLEASE make people keep shops open till later. i couldn't find anyone till  the last instant who could even tell me where Boosey and Hawkes was!! >:(
but anyway its a nice country, especially compared to Paris!( i was on a holiday in europe from the 4th to the 24th for the first time, so i went to all these places)

I am *** jealus !
In my country I have to pay 20$ for a Deutsche Grammophon normal cd, 38$ a double box, and like 120$ for a collection (4-7 CDs average). And I can't get Naxos because Naxos doesn't import here, EMI "encore" doesn't either.
I get a worse time when I walk into a Music Store, because when I ask for some Bethoven all the people turns around and looks at me with that "whaaaaat?" face. And the employees stay away from me because they don't know a heck about classical music.

I'm so glad I'm moving to US next year.

ELOQUENCE series is very good and cheap.

These are recordings from the 60', 70' and 80', from the catalogs of DG, PHILIPS and DECCA. Of course, no booklet is included. The only info you get is performer(s), date of recording and works opus.

But you have great soloists and conductors at a very affordable price. For instance, regarding pianists, you have: Gulda, Kempff, Ashkenazy, Bolet, Kovacevich, Arrau, etc...

are we sitting comfortably? then ill begin...
In Blackburn (the largest town near where I live with a HMV) is a chavy area and dance music heaven. No-one - let me repeat - NO-ONE! - purchases classical CDs... in fact im in serious doubt about whether there is a classical section in the whole shop. Also, chavs would take the mick... it may be nicer and more civilised down south, but that is the situation in my town... i never have my window open when playing music either becuase im afraid of getting a brick through it...
Tom
PS Maybe ive exaggerated, but this is an impression I get... i think im a bit agoraphobic... i get slightly nervous around people i dont know.. well, not really but kind of...
OK

Nice one Pilky.

I remember walking into the HMV shop in Glasgow and asking if they had a classical department.

I was lucky to get out alive.

There are certain cities where one is safer not to ask.

Ooh, we are talking about a pop singles shop. I thought we were talking about a music shop. No really, there is a difference.

Here we have a shop called The Free Record shop, stupid name, and they only sell the most popular of popular music. They also sell DVD movies, games, anything popular, anything that sells well. Now they don't actually sell music. I mean, I couldn't find a record I like if I tried, their collection is so narrow.

And now they are going to sell vibrators. Yes, really, no yoke.

I have the feeling that the UK is a bit messed up in terms of music. I once went there with my soccer club, living for a week with a family of child of a English soccer club. So our two soccer clubs had a relation. Each year some would either go there or they would come here. And while I was there that person bought a single of a, for us, very old hit and played it over and over and over. It was really terrible.
Of course this is a meaningless personal experience. But isn't it true that the UK market is the biggest and most important one of Europe?

The UK itself doesn't have a real classical music history itself. I mean, not as much as germany and Italy. In germany hard rock is almost mainstream. Also, all those composers are part of the national heritage or conscience.

Then France has all its rap, many of it made by minorities. This also makes France a bit of an oddity.

In Norway music is a strong part of the education. There are many many bands in that country. Scandinavian countries are all famous for their hard rock and metal and other bands.

Japan is karaoke and electric guitar crazy. Flashy hard rock is very popular. Of course western classical music is also relatively popular. Japan is a very strange country. It has always been isolated, developing its strange samurai culture. But now, in modern times, it has soaked up so much western culture. It is kind of hard for me to understand why.

India is probably the country with the richest musical heritage. I am not so sure about how they view different kinds of music. I have never been there but two of my friends claim they saw very little signs of music. But then again, there do live an incredible number of people there. Just as in China. I have read here on this forum that China will soon have 120 million pianists.

In China western classical music is the only music that is understood. Remember the 'famous' first performance of the Rolling Stones in China? I have been told that the audience consisted largely of foreigners. Chinese people do not seem to care about this music.

And hard rock in the middle east is kind of a way of life for teenagers and students that rebel against the whole system. I mean, any form of western music would equal 'punk'.

So it seems the UK is just strange.

Yes we are, but we can't buy vibrators in music stores.

If there is money to be made in it, I am surprised Richard Branson has not had a go.

If had a shop, I would sell vibrators and lawn mowers. This would prove that you need a man for some things.

I think in your old gamingforce profile you had a big sign with "pilky" written on it in a horrible green colour.
