I learnt blues guitar by getting some play along disks.

Great fun, but can't remember the name of the series.

I then bought me a "Lucille".

i play the guitar, but that's because i have to for uni, and i hate it. like in the end i don't mind cos it's an instrument and i like to play music, but just the instrument, playing chords, and the guitar frames and tabs and stuff drive me nuts. so do F minor chords. have come to the conclusion that the best way to learn to play songs on the guitar is by just playing everything and getting used to switching your fingers around. now i'm going to go practice singing and playing octopus's garden because that's all my co-ordination can handle at this point!

If you are learning rock, try out one of the few "fake" guides out.

If you are playing electric guitar, you can have a great time just playing power 5ths with a lot of distortion. You can learn anything Status Quo did in 10 minutes.

You can even irritate your neighbours at the same time.

The guitar is the single most overrated instrument of all time.

I tried to play guitar once. For about 10 minutes. I just can't wrap my head around the 6 strings. Really, 6 strings is just the guitar trying to show off. Hey look at me! I have 2 more strings than a violin or bass. I must be a better instrument.

Get lost guitar!

A chord is three or more notes at once working together. Not 6  :-*

How is that showing off? The piano tends to keep all its strings hidden in its box.

Unless some fellow becomes nosey enough to pry into it.

:( why such hate?
Anyways I've been playing the guitar for about 9 years now and it not easy to pick up for beginners, press a few keys in the right order on piano and voila a melody, while on guitar you need a little more work before you are able to do that. For rock guitar the entire Troy Stetina series are very useful, also visit this site www.ibreathemusic.com and check out all the articles (some can be intimidating for a beginner just start with the basic ones and not sweeping picking or string skipping ;)). And just with piano it is important to know what kind of music you want to play, and work towards playing it. Besides that, recording yourself is very useful because the guitar can be a real 'noisy' instrument in the hands of less experienced players. Listen critically and eliminate all string noise using your 2 hands (palm of your picking hand, and index finger on your fretting hand).
For getting in a band, all you need is to be able to play tight chord progressions. Then start practicing and give the lead guitarist a run for his/er money. Also learn the pentatonic scale in all positions and start doing some improvising asap, doesn't get more fun than that.

Actually the average medium sized piano has about 230 strings.

Hey Prometheus,

Only the low keys have single strings. The midrange has two and the higher register uses three strings. My upright is laid out this way. About 230 strings all together. I think this is pretty much standard in most pianos. Anyone care to count the strings on their piano?

Well, if you have a grand then you do open the lid to show off all your strings...

Well, my parents didn't have a piano and I have a digital piano. So I don't know too much about piano's.

I dont understand you guys (those who *hate* guitar)
I've been playing guitar for 10 years (piano 5 years) and must say that
there is so many beautifull pieces(classical pieces) composed for guitar and it is
beautifull just as piano is..

Last saturday I was on classical guitar concert and it was great! All of you would change your opinion after
listening those guys..

And if you are good with strumming chords, you can always take you guitar with you and have
a great fun with your friends, wherever you go..

All I want to say is that:
Guitar is GREAT
Piano is GREAT

Speed: 45/80 <>
Bars: 22/83 <>
Performance: 1/10 <>

One day I'll wake up and play my perfect Ocean etude. That day I'll be simply...happy

The only thing that makes me want to play guitar is so that I can sing with my own guitar accompaniment!  Tried self-teaching it years and years back -that failed miserably, sold the guitar for 50 livres when I bought it for 300.  Oh well, end of story really but I was looking at this 29 quid guitar at the charity shop, I sort of want it...

Maybe one day I'll give it another go if I got the capital.

I bought a chords book (which I still have at home) and that helped more than anything.

These links would be helpful:

I always play the piano and sing, I find it more natural than on the guitar.  See with the guitar I usually would have to stop and stretch my finger all the time, straining a bit I end up singing one note for longer than 1 hour just to wait for my fingers to arrange itself properly.  Piano accompaniment always sound nicer...guitar is just more relaxing and natural.  Seems more effortless to play the guitar and sing rather than the piano.

Haha Puff the Magic Dragon is my favourite song ever! lol but truly.  Try "Oh Susannah!" next ;)

Yeah can totally relate to that. however i must say thank god for the guitar- i've been doing my music teaching prac this week and there's no piano in the classroom so i've brought in my guitar, there's no way i'm singing without some kind of accompaniment to keep me in tune! so i must admit, it's a good thing to have in that respect. i transpose everything into D major so i can change chords easily hahahaha

Guitar is my main instrument alongside piano; they vary as to which I prefer at any one time. Gotta love playing Paganini Caprices at Guildhall auditions and watching the judges' jaws drop. Personally, I prefer electric to classical guitar, mainly because I just find it more diverse tonally and musically. Not saying the classical isn't, I just find the electric moreso.

Classical guitar is technically much harder to play than the piano. One has to form the notes as well as hit them, plus there is virtually no sustain. Within 5 minutes one could easily play a scale on the piano--not so using classical technique on the guitar. I realize piano music is often harder, but the shear mechanics of classical guitar playing is much more difficult.

I'm convinced that all virtuoso instruments are equally as hard.  Simply because they all have had their music pushed as far as it can go.

Guitar suffers from it's image of a Pop/rock music instrument (btw I have nothing against pop and rock  8) and some Pop/rock guitarists are indeed superlative musician - but only a few of them lol).
When you listen to decent jazz or classical guitarists and try to figure out what they can do with 6 strings, you just have the same kind of amazement as when you watch a good pianist playing a virtuoso etude of Chopin or Rachmaninoff.
As someone stated, the mechanical part of playing a guitar is something you have to work quite more than "just" depressing keys.
Producing a neat chord of 3 notes on the piano don't take more than a few minutes. On a guitar, hell, count a few weeks if you're talented.

I agree.

Every musical instrument has limitations and challenges. None are easier or more difficult to master than the other. The possibilities of each instrument’s capabilities are forever being pushed. True, it’s easier to play a 3-note chord on the piano than a guitar, but then a guitarist isn’t expected to play massive double arpeggios in contrary motion.
