Mozart Piano Sonatas !
on: June 29, 2006, 07:18:38 PM
I think that the Mozart piano sonatas are not talked about enough ( compared to beethovens) I know that beethovens are better but i have the Mozart complete sonatas book and a lot of them are very nice.

Whats your opinion on then, do you play any, which ones?

My favourite is alla turca - the most famous too i think!

I like K. 457 and the accompanying fantasy (K. 475). K. 330 is also nice.
It all happens on Discworld, where greed and ignorance influence human behavior... and perfectly ordinary people occasionally act like raving idiots.

A world, in short, totally unlike our own.

K280 (F major) has a totally stunning slow movement and a sparkling third; I never understood why this early sonata has not made it into the repertoire (perhaps because of the relatively uninteresting 1st mvt).

I play none of them.

Haydn, Clementi or Dussek for me.

Why are Clementi's Sonatas so much more neglected than Mozart's?

The main reason I have heard is that the many people regard his sonatas as mere works for the betterment of a student's technique; however, I think that Clementi's Sonatas have equal (or maybe better) themes than Mozart's do. What do you think? Another reason I have heard is that the development sections in Clementi's sonatas are inferior to those in Mozart's, but I am not quite sure how true that is, especially in his later sonatas. Clementi was one of the fathers of the sonata form, and helped to establish modern piano playing.

I love Mozart's sonatas, although they are always given short shrift compared to Beethoven's, and compared to Mozart's own concertos.

I have played K332, 333 (which is a "mini-concerto" with a cadenza in the 3rd movement) and 310 (I think that's the A minor one).  I also adore K330, 331.  One of the easier ones, the G major (K282?--could be wrong) is very lovely.

You're thinking of K.283, which IS lovely.  so is K.282.
