And with apologies to my neighbor for my regrettable typo:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MR. ELLIOTT CARTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There.  I'm toasting him as I write this!  Two "T's", it is!!

Well, I raise my glass to him too - and if he's looking in here right now (a most unlikely possibility, I think), I'm sure he'll appreciate that extra "T"! (actually, he's probably working on something right now so will be entirely oblivious of this...)

Best,

"Gawd" is a colloquial spelling for "God", as surely you know already, so why are you invoking Him in this entreaty? Go listen to those CDs - go on!

The Dream of Gerontius - a masterpiece by anyone's standards if ever there was one - stands head and shoulders above all his other liturgically-inspired works - yet Elgar was not a devout and sure Catholic; he thought, worried, considered, etc.

Agreed.  Genius.  My favorite bit (i don't know if this is surprising or not) is when he walks through hell.  (And of course the angel appearing to him after that, but we can neglect that for now.)

P.S. I'm off to watch faust tomorrow.  Will try not to sell my soul.
