You may be a great pianist, if you have only a small repertoire, as for example Anton Batagov, who recorded the complete 20 regards by Messiaen and the great piano works by Ravel  (I think, Batagov is the best pianist from all I ever heard)

but normally

a real pianist is someone, who plays 60 concerts upwards pro year, has a great repertoire which includes many of the great piano works from Bach, Beethoven, Schumann, Chopin, Brahms and so on.
If it doesn't work - try something different!

Sorry I need to re-state this

Well said, quasimodo.

However, some people may not be interested in "communicating" at all, yet they may still consider themself (and be considered by others) as a real pianist.  Also, some people may be exactly what others consider to be a real pianist, yet they do not view themself that way.  And in the latter case, who decides ?

A recent debate I had with someone, as well as m1469's challenging made me decide that my initial attempt to answer the question was rubish and that the wording was actually, contrary to my philosophy.

Here's an attempt for a new answer:

You are a real pianist when you are capable of making music on the piano.

Obvioulsy the statement is quite vague because it adresses the matter of defining what is music. Anyway, piano is just the instrument. The goal is to make music. Now depending on what you call "music" you can decide whether a person is a pianist or not.

A pianist is a person who is able to play music on the piano, i guess a "reall pianist" is the type of person that dedicated's a lot of his or her time to the art of piano playing and then goes on to teach and perform classical or Jazz or modern music . Some do it better than others.

i used to stop every time i heard a pop/jazz pianist in strawbridges.  this time (because my kids did not stop and i had to keep up with them) i couldn't.  this made me feel like a real pianist (ignoring any other pianist who plays by ear and improvises - suddenly playing music by 'reading people' and attempting to play their favorite song without asking them) - just rush walking by and acting like it's the least important thing in the world.

pianists just are entranced by the sound of the piano.  they could hear an amateur at the mall and would still be standing there - listening and encouraging.  they never make noise at regular concert halls and you can pick them out because they are the most quiet - (unless they have a big ego and are pointing out wrong notes).  even at costco - i've had long extended conversations cut short by my husband who suddenly says 'we can find a better piano' - when i wasn't there to buy a piano at all.  just simply to talk to a piano person.  it's like - if you know someone plays the piano - there's this instant connection. even if they've only begun lessons.  i actively search for people at the park, when my daughter goes to play - using the first question 'do you play the piano.'  if they don't - i just sit there and don't talk (just kidding).

Many a truths are said in jest.  This is very, very funny.  :D
