P70 Opinions?
on: July 30, 2006, 01:09:30 AM

Im having real trouble finding the time to practice in my house these days. Well, not finding the time, more like finding QUIET time! Everyone is so damn noisy I just cant concentrate most of the time.

I thought it would be great if I got an electric piano, then I make up lost practice at night when everyones asleep. I tend to work better at night (probably cuz of the peace and quiet) so this might work out better. Plus, as I work in music technology, Im sure this would be useful for inputting midi as much current controller is garbage.

Unfortunately I dont have a lot to spend. BUT, I do have a shop owe me £500 quid, so I was thinking of getting them to send me a P70 a stand.

Obviously I shall try it first and compare to some others. But I was wondering what you guys made of them? The action is probably my highest criteria - Id like my EP to feel remotely like a piano if possible (although Im not expecting miracles). Volume and sound quality are lesser criteria. If it came to it, I have a few high end piano sample libraries on the computer, so I would use it to drive those and use the monitors to listen.

Really what I want is something that wont cost the earth, but doesnt feel like an old PSR keyboard!

Cheers all,

SJ

The P60 is not.  :D

Really?

Would you rate the P60 better value as a budget (yet functional) second instrument?

Seriously mate, I started learning Chopin Op 9 No 2 yesterday, and early today I was starting to put the hands together in the first phrase. Im concentrating to my absolute max, when my sister and her muppet boyfriend storm into the room.

Iv never been closer to mass murder! So there in it was decided that I NEED something to practice on at night (for the sake of my poor sanity) ;D

The beauty of the electronic keyboard is also that putting on the earphones will mask out a lot of those "muppet" & sister noises so you can practice just about anytime, not just at night. :)

Good Luck on your search

I consider the P60 the cheapest acceptable digital of the Yamaha range in terms of sound and keyboard touch. Any intrument below it will not really be acceptable. However, there are much better digitals out there (e.g the P120) and some top range ones (e.g. the CLP 970).  If I was strapped for cash and could not afford anything else, that is what I would get. In fact I am seriously considering getting one to use as portable keyboard to take with me on holidays.

Best wishes,
Bernhard.

Lol, dont you live in Brazil?

Surely you never need to take another holiday again old boy?!

Now if you'd said you goinf to go an old PSR and use it as a surf board, then Id be with you  ;D

Seriously, I shall probably see if I cant find a P90 on Ebay. Or I have a few contacts with Cash Convertors, its possible they might have one (you'd be amazed what they get given!).

How much more lying on the beach can I take?

I need holidays! (perhaps go to the mountains for a while) :D

Best wishes,

i have a P70, and i kind of wish i had the patience to save up for something sightly better. here are a few of my observations:

PROS
1 - it's cheap!
2 - it's relatively light. i can carry it in a shoulder bag. but i wouldn't recommend it
3 - the feel of the keys is quite nice. some would disagree. but i read your post and what you say that you want from a digital. and the P70 fits the bill just fine.
4 - the sound is great...with headphones

CONS
1 - there is a noticeable thumping sound from the keys sometimes. it comes and goes. i'm not sure why. is it the temperature? humidity? my ears? i don't know.
2 - there is a very noticeable piercing/tinny ring from notes in the 2nd octave above middle C. some people refuse to believe that it exists. which i find odd BECAUSE IT'S THERE!!!!

3 - it doesn't remember your settings! i only use 1 voice and 1 key velocity setting. yet every time i turn it off and on again, it goes back to the default. VERY annoying!
4 - the sound is crap...with the onboard speakers

good luck!  8)
