Aggression
on: August 12, 2006, 04:11:43 PM
Just a thought, does one need X amount of aggression to learn 30 piano concerto and 250 solo piano pieces, obviouslt there are some pianists that have done that, so surly this type of pianist has an elment of aggression, possibly any thought on the matter.

I suppose I'm a slow learner, because for me to have truly learned a piece means that I've memorized it and all. Still, though, in ten years I think I've learned about 40 pieces that I'd consider advance performance rep. So I think that's doable. (Those 10 years start at my first time touching a piano.) I'm not sure you'd need aggression, just dedication... if that helps?

That is not aggression, that is dedication and devotion, desire ,call it whatever you like.
And don`t forget TIME as very important factor.
My advice, find yourself someone to pay your bills, while you are practising!!!

I think the thing to remember is that all good pianists only got good by learning new pieces, therefore the ones who play big stuff like Rcah 3 etc.. must have worked up to that standard and will have accumulated a huge repertoire along the way.

you could be a doctor, zheer.  bella musica, too.  musicians sometimes don't know how smart they are . people try to fit you into one thing sometimes.  just music.  what if you're really good at some aspect of medicine.

i mean, our doc recently moved over to a hospital emergency room.  more action or something.  i think he even told us that he'd worked ambulance part-time.  (voluntary).

i wouldn't mind working orthopedics, now that i broke a leg.  do you know the cost of one broken leg was $22,000.   yep.  medicine is pretty good job.  unless you want to be a lawyer.  or real estate person.  or mercedes car dealer.  i think a son of a friend of my hubby never went to college and makes more than most college grads selling mercedez benz cars.  it's just a state of mind, i guess.

Yes it is, however, in most case that kind of guy's pleasure is only to make money. Often they have no enjoyment in life's distractions like music...
Life's not fair those guys have the money but they never think about buying a Fazioli.

For the initial question, no, I don't think it's about aggression. It's a state of mind as well. They just love it and they have the optimal ways of learning stuff ingrained.
When I was a student in mathematics, one teacher told us that the best mathematician is the laziest one. I think it goes the same way for most skills (excluding sports), including piano. When you're lazy (but smart), you find the right way to take the maximal profit of minimum time of learning and practice.

You can always be pianist and do somwthing else for a living.
I know a woman who is not a top class pianist, she is below average, but she figured out how to make a lot of money just playing piano.
One of her ideas is:
She organised a concert, but that is not a classic concert where somebody play and we listen.
She calls it interactive project.
She plays ,for instance fur elise and that talks to audience about it!!!!
She used to ask them, what they think about author of the piece, music iteselt...etc.etc.
People went crazy about it,coz they are part of concerto not just "passive" listeners
OF course she takes a lot of money for this
Godd idea,eh?

yes. but how much does she make?  over here, everything is taxed ( i guess like everywhere else).  if you are 'self employed,' you don't bring home what you think you made.

bearzinthehood, you're right.  selling mercedez benz would get old after a couple years.  i mean - once you have the money - you can move to something else, right?  i think this kid didn't want to go to college right away - but he might be in college now.  his parents could afford to send him the first year - but he didn't want to do college right away.

i tell my son - just take a job.  any job.  when you work for someone else - they pay health, medical, benefits (unless it's part-time) - and you get the 'take home' pay (and they figure all the other stuff for you since they have accountants.  when you work for yourself, you do EVERYTHING.  accounting, taxes, everything.  it looks easy - but it's really a matter of being very tight fisted.  i mean - my husband when he was self employed kept track of mileage and gas and time.  if you forget - then later you're stuck with unknown costs that eat into your profit.

plus, i've never really met a concert artist that wasn't starving in some way or other.  it's like saying 'the world loves classical music' - when in actual fact - it's probably 15% or less.  old people ususually.  of course, if you have a few older women willing you their estates - that would be nice!  depends on how well you play.

bearzinthehood, you're just mad at me because i said you had a babyface the first time.  well, join the club.  i don't look a bit over 21 (that's what an old lady said in my husband's church).  she couldnt' see very well.  it's a good thing to look young when you're young because then you'll age well, right?!
