I read that Chopin's favorite theme that he wrote was the opening section of the Op.10#3 Etude.

You are right. But for some reason I doubt that chopin would consider that his best song.

This "song" business has been debated over & over.

Notice, I didn't use the term "song" but I'm not going to let it affect my blood pressure. Just use the appropriate terminology when you reply to Posters and maybe the message will get through.

it's not a matter of debate; it's confusing because maybe mephisto really does mean to discuss 'Songs' that Chopin wrote for piano and voice and set to various polish texts (for example, 'The Maiden's Wish'), and wants to leave 'pieces' like the Etudes or Ballades out of it.  Either that, or he uses one name interchangably with the other, not understanding the difference..

well, mephisto, which is it?

I've only heard a few of them in transcription by Liszt. I've been meaning to find a recording of them because I have a feeling I'd want to play them.

Of course, I'd need a singer too.  :P

If someone asks me to name only one favourite composition of any composer I would say Chopin's ballade in G minor!
It is so good.. well, I cant play it (maybe in 5-6 year I'll be able to learn it) but love to hear it so
Please send your recording, I am looking forward to hear your playing..

KKA, I think you are correct in that Mephisto really meant Song and not a Piano Solo composition.

So let's see, The one time someone actually means SONG it was not interpreted correctly!

Hmmm....I can't think of any Chopin 'Songs'. The composer I associate most with 'songs' is Schubert, and thats the most I'll go, I think..... :)

You allready proved you didn't mean vocal music, as you mentionned op.10 no.3 as a song, too. Songs are sung, not played. Pieces are played. Op.10 no.3 is a piece , not a song. You mentionned too there were lots of it. In fact, I don't know any, as Chopin is famous for writing exclusively for piano ! And come on ... how can you pick ONE favorite piece by Chopin ... they are all too beautiful !

Mephisto said: "You are right. But for some reason I doubt that chopin would consider that his best song."

If you still don't get meph's sarcasm, you're beyond help.

Also, Chopin didn't write exclusively for the piano, and he wrote many songs. You tried to sound intelligent and ended up sounding ignorant, not just once, but twice in the same post.

Let it be a lesson in humility.

Yes, Liszt`s transcriptions are very nice. I saw Andsnes perform meine freuden as an encore and it was great.

If someone asks me to name only one favourite composition of any composer I would say Chopin's ballade in G minor!
It is so good..

Partly, I agree - this is indeed a masterpiece and in my opinion Chopin's first in his career of composing (at least among solo pieces). Some of Chopin's most beautiful themes reside within this ballade. The secondary theme is captivating beyond description and I really like the contrasts between the thematic sections and the more technical parts. Over time, however, I've felt that the ending, particularly the last eight bars or so, lacks much of the epic quality so evident in the rest of the piece. I'm a bit disappointed Chopin didn't find a better way to end this masterpiece than the simplistic noisy keyboard runs with octaves and thirds he chosed. Maybe it was fashion at the time which caused it.

Someone may flame me for daring to judge a true master, but this is how I feel about op.23. Overall though, nobody should have any doubts about choosing to learn this piece. You will love it and the crowd will adore it.

Comments greatly appreciated - do you feel the same way or have I completely lost it? :-)

Yes, we are talking about Op.74. They are just making fun of the ignorant and the uneducated noobs who can't differentiate between PIECE and SONG. (read: answered Ballades, Etudes, etc.)  :P

This thread is proof that when it comes to classical knowledge, the common man is either deaf or refuses to listen.

How many times has the argument over Piece vs. Song come up? I stopped counting after 500 or so.

I didn't intend any hostility at all; writing on a forum is a pretty expressionless way of communicating, so the "dryness" with which it was meant to come across evidently didn't show. I also didn't mean he was nasty towards me, I meant what he said about the people posting in the thread in general, and I'm pretty sure most people would agree that calling people f**kheads is pretty nasty. Neither did I call him stupid. Why the fuss?

I'm sure you're right, I haven't sifted through his entire output. That comment was meant for the sdc post and the sdc post alone.

Anyway, to (try to) keep the peace: I'm not going to apologise when I didn't mean any insult in the first place, especially when however nasty my post may have looked, jre's looked moreso. But I have nothing personal against anyone here, including jre (don't know anyone well enough), and I actually feel a bit bad about going on about his post when it was other people, not him, who for some reason decided to jump on my case about it.
