Wow. page two of the thread. Thanks Ed, Hmoll.

Ticket sales are going so-so, so far. Hoping for more people. I never realized it's THAT hard to sale out a hall. However, there will be a bunch of ads/spots/interviews etc coming up, so there's still hope. Look for 9 spots on WQXR close to the concert, an interview on Columbia University's FM channel, a plug on David Dubal's program on WQXR, and other possibilities...

Hope to see some of you guys there!

Wish I could have made it, Meiting, but I was at work until late that night.

If you're over your huff :) , let us know how it went.

You see that Tormentor?  You're famous!! hahaha.

On a side note, Mei-ting will make his debut on David Dubal's radio program :"Reflections from the Keyboard, the Pianist in Comparative Performance" tonight from 10-11 EST.
This is a great program for any pianophile, as Mr. Dubal takes recordings from famous (and not so famous) pianists and compares them head-to-head.  I've been fortunate to have been put on this program a couple of times, and tonight you'll get to hear Mei-Ting's Feux Follets along with the legendary Richter performance.  I think you can listen to it over the internet at www.wqxr.com
 Enjoy!

He's 21 right now. Do you think playing the paganini etudes is as much an achievement as playing the complete Chopin etudes?

Being 21 doesn't mean he just learned the paganini etudes, most likely he learned it in his teen years, which is quite remarkable.  I have not seen so many ppl managing to play the paganini etudes in their teen years.

Quote

:Well put that aside, Yundi Li, he's just
:spectacular.  Iunno about that Piano-e-competition
:(actually yes I do)

what do you know about the piano-e-comp?

well I admit I dunno everything, I've heard about the piano-e-competition and it's quite prestigious I believe, but other than that I can't say I know much more about it.

Quote

:but Yundi Li won the 1st place in the 14th International
:Chopin Competition, after 10 years (theres one every 5
:years) of no 1st places because the judges thought no
:one could bring out the spirit of Chopin enough.

Actually, that's not exactly true :) That's only what they tell the public.

Umm... okay, then what's your side of the story?  Go check the official competition website for the past records.

Quote

:I read on the back of the front cover of his Chopin
:recordings cd case, it said that after he won he
:requested piano lessons with the famous Polish pianist
:Krystian Zimmerman, and even he said that he had
:nothing to teach the talented pianist!

He also said he wanted to be "the next Zimmerman". Now don't get me wrong, I like Zimmerman's playing just fine - but.. shouldn't one try to aim a little higher? maybe Horowitz or Rubinstein if you want to go with someone of this century...

Someone of this century?  Excuse if I'm wrong, but I believe that Zimerman is at the very least still alive at the moment.  And what one aims is entirely their business, and not everyone sets Horowitz or Rubinstein as their role models.

Quote

:Anyways you guys should really check up his pieces on
:winmx or somethin.  It's definately worth it.

I have. And they're rather bland.

I would like to hear your insights on some of his pieces.

Quote

Sounds like you know him pretty well.. Have you seen the ad-campaigns they're doing for him in china?

No I haven't really because I don't live in china, I just dug that up from some website.  What are they doing for him in china?

Btw, good luck on your performances, mei-ting!  Come down to Vancouver in Canada sometime!  Love to hear you play!

And jakester - please note I'm not trying to go against you personally or anything, just wanna see some other's ppl's insights on this matter, and after all he's one of my favourite pianists :D

Hey mei-ting is there a reason why mp3.com won't let me download your songs? Is that your doing or there's? I have been trying for a week or so.

I meant by teenagers.  And yea I'm not saying Chopin etudes are easy, but you don't see so many teens walking around able to perform the entire paganini etudes.

But can anyone brief me on the thing jakester commented about the International Chopin Competition?  I still think it's absurd.

Regarding the chopin competition, I don't exactly know what went on there but I'll try to find out.

The Paganini etudes of Liszt are difficult, but then so are the chopin etudes. Personally, I believe (without having played the paganini etudes, so take it at face value) that the Liszt paganini's are slightly more difficult technically, but the chopin are much more difficult musically. Also, there's the issue of stamina with the chopin etudes as there are after all, 24 of them (plus three Moscheles) and to do those in a recital, together, is quite draining (personal experience there ;D)

Regarding mp3.com, that site is officially closed. I've looked into the next thing, which will be Cnet, but I don't think I'll be doing a big production there - maybe just a few recordings. Instead, I'll turn my attention to my website, and add more recordings there. Look for some Scarlatti to go up next, and maybe the rachmaninoff preludes op. 23. I just have to find the recordings hehe.

Nethermagic, I was a teenager when I first played the complete chopin etudes, albeit not in the same recital, but in the same year. Ah, I remember it well.. the year was 1996, and I was 15, and I think I might even have the tapes from those... but no, I won't be putting those up:)

Mei-Ting

Hi,
What an honor to meet with the pianist himself! I have to say I enjoyed your playing a lot. They are all very exciting. And your Feux Follets, got to be one of the fastest and most exciting recording of the piece ever made. (I have to listened to quite a few recordings of the piece)
I just want to say I love your playing, and please play more music and open up the ears of the audience world-wide.

best regard,

SteinwayModelD, thanks. Bigger is better, no?

(don't worry.. it's a lame joke:))

DAwud7, the three Moscheles, when I wrote that, I meant the three nouvelles, of course. They were written for Moscheles's compilation of etudes, and were published by Moscheles.

Website has been updated:

Since mp3.com is now closed, I'm moving quite a few recordings over to my own site, and putting up a bunch of new ones.

New recordings:
Bartok Etudes op. 18
Brahms Paganini variations (both books)
two Scarlatti Sonatas (K. 318, 319, read about them at the site)
Schubert Sonata D 958

There should be a couple more recordings going up in the next 2 weeks. I'll post something when that's done.

On a side (and completely unrelated) note, anybody here in North Carolina? or Budapest (hungary)? or Vienna, Warsaw, South Carolina, Walla Walla Washington?

how on earth could any physically ordinary human being play the chopin etudes when they were 15?  i'm 17 and halfway through learning them...when did you start working on them meiting? and how did you develop mastery so fast?

Clearly, you're jealous of MT's double thirds.  He's a phenomenal pianist with actually lots of "original and interesting musical thoughts"

i agree with the other dude to a degree, meiting is a bit banal.

i agree with Ed, LL's tchaik first is bad. But then again so is almost everything I've heard him play. MT's playing is pretty good, I wouldn't consider his Tannhauser to be banal in the slightest; he brings out some wonderful details that I didn't hear anyone else play. Sometimes I think being banal is preferable to being vulgar like some other chinese pianist, as long as it's not a continuous thing like with Pollini.

I saw Henry Wong-Doe play Prokofiev 3 a few month ago. The handkerchief is a highlight. He has technical security and is very musical. Applause was furious at the end. He gave one encore (chopin op10-11) which was played delicately. The arppegiated chords were not grouped as "chords" but continuous arppegios with no breaks in between. Very nice effect

He sounds like a finer pianist than Mei-Ting to me.  :)
