"Busy" university students taking piano lessons
on: October 17, 2006, 09:19:49 AM
I have two students at RCM grade 10 level in university.  Piano is just on the side, and not their major.

Their mom tried to get them a break from November to March without lessons (and some hopes of taking the August 2007 exam).  I was able to convince her to at least stick to bi-weekly lessons in November (I'm not enthuasitic about the idea, but at least the will have some lessons - and myself some income).  To be fair, the mom did abide by my 1 month cancellation policy and talked to me about it early october.

So what are some things I could do to at least keep them interested in regular lessons throughout the busy schedule at school?

Also since November-December is generally when most essays are due and exams occur, what lesson suplements could I give that wouldn't require too much heavy practice work?  I'm thinking about brushing up on ther ear training, as well as mabe finding some duets for teacher-student playing that are easy enough to work out during the lesson.  Maybe I might teach some improvisation.  Any other suggestions?

Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

A not-yet-thirty-ish male living just north of the US in Canada.  You were close  ;)

I'd set them some listening and music appreciation work.  they can listen to stuff as they are revising and every so often enter up something into a log. Use some lesson time to look through scores and listen to performance practice etc and show some analysis techniques possibly even some memorisation strategies..this will all help them learn efficiently when they do have time to practice flat out.
