Need a piano/vocal repetoire for beginners
on: October 27, 2006, 08:52:23 PM
Once upon a time I played the guitar, and singing with it was part of the fun.

Now I'm on piano, and my repetoire is all Bach Bach Bach Mozart Bach. I adore the instrument but the showman in me needs a little something else. I've got talented hands, but my talented pipes are going to waste.

I'm looking for piano/vocal pop artists and pieces that a relative beginner can handle (which I believe may encompass about 95% of pop piano). There are a select few Coldplay songs that are worth a few minutes of my time, and I know Ben Folds has some interesting stuff...Billy Joel is too obvious and I'm sick of his music anyway. I'm kind of stuck for anything else. Suggestions? Extra points if it's actually fun to play as WELL as sing...

Oh, and I'm a dude, so Tori Amos probably won't work.

This was a lot easier when I played a Strat. I guess people see the piano as "feminine."

there is a beautiful metal song called warmness on the soul by avenged sevenfold that has a nice piano structure. not too hard you could probably figure it out by ear it's in g major with no real hard parts but it is a sweet song!

Select  songs from  CDs of Elton John , Barry Mannilow or Richard Claydermann. All are  Piano with Pop.

To hell with this crap! I'll just write my own music. There are not enough decent works out there for male piano/vocalists.

No need to get  heated, uncivil and nasty.  In the first place, it is you
who is asking for inputs.  If you find their answers or suggestions to be crap,
how about just keeping it to yourself ... and surely this world will be slightly better.

If I misunderstood your post ... my apologies.

Sorry. Didn't mean to be rude. I think I'm frustrated with the male pop piano that's out there. It seems like you're stuck with super-sugary, like Rufus Wainwright, or you play Billy Joel, which I'm sick of. I've come across a few Tom Waits and Ben Folds tunes I like, though. I'm just finding my options limited, so maybe I need to write the songs I'm looking for.

Hi,

Since you are frustrated with the male pop piano stuff out there, how about some Schubert lieder? You could try it in the original German or singable English translations.

Regards,
Srivats

You could always sing some songs made famous by women instead, you just need to transpose. Being a woman with a low voice most of the vocal repertoire I learned was men's songs, with a few pronouns reversed just to make it make sense!  If your improvisation is good enough, a fake book or two might give you some pointers. Try jazz or blues books, the songs tend to lend themselves rather better to adaptations.
Go you big red fire engine!

How about listening to choral music and only singing the main tune with the accompaniment. Hence, you make the voice the prominent part. Wich is very important in vocal music. A lot of artists nowadays makes the music the more prominent, wich sucks because you can't hear a word. See what you can get from www.dbchoir (Drakensberg Boys choir in SA) Try to Mail Bernard Kruger. A fantastic musician (and one of the condutors)!
