What are you going to do for Halloween tonight?
on: October 31, 2006, 12:54:59 PM
I was thinking about teepee-ing a house with my friend, but I've got a piano lesson and school work to do :(

What will you be doing?

I'm turning of the lights in the front of the house, going to the back of the house and practicing. So I guess you could say i'm doing nothing.

I've spent the evening at the library, studying, and am now about to go read a good book in the bath.

My, we're an exciting bunch, aren't we!

It has been and gone here. We buy a few bags of lollies and dish them out when children call. Last night I was training on the exercycle in the garage when some children called, dressed in horrible looking outfits, so my wife gave them some lollies. I had just completed a session so I was rather naughty. I emerged, sweaty, in tattered exercise clothes, in the half-dark just as they were passing. I said in my best Pennywise voice, which I do very well, "Hi ya ! Wanna balloooon ? They all float. You'll float too when you're down here."

They took off down the drive so quickly they nearly dropped their sack of lollies.

I'm escaping the ringing doorbell by going out to movie and dinner with a special someone.  ;) notice how I said "movie and dinner" rather than "dinner and a movie." It helps to have something to talk about at dinner..

Have you checked this with her or are you just assuming it?

What did I do today? Well, I put some glass-reinforced parcel tape around the letterbox here to avoid the insertion of stinkbombs or any other kind of bombs - and, so far, "halloween" has passed off pretty uneventfully. Othwerise, business more or less as usual...

I should imagine, Ally, that you should have no need for a costume and make-up on Halloween.

hmmm. glass reinforced parcel tape?  bra, panties - sexiest man alive?

and, yes, i know for a fact that if ada is not scared off by vegemite - she is indeed an unstoppable, unscarable person.  excepting of course, elspeth, who photographs bears.

alistair, mailboxes are also VERY important here in pennsylvania.  people take great pains with them (painting them, hanging decorations around them, putting their address numbers meticulously on them, buying all sorts of ritzy shapes and things, and of course, the oft wonderous corn stalk attached).  if i were you, i wouldn't worry about a bomb.  i mean, who hates you that much.  you are hardly around.  you are like the mysterious librarian or something.  or rather, mysterioius sorabji archivist.

go to bed.  get up at 2 or 3 am.  study for an hour.  go back to sleep.  it's like you got a full night's sleep - rather than...stay up until 3 not getting much done - wake up at the last minute.  feel terrible.

I worked late and now am on the forum.  I am currently planning hijinks.  Not doing, just planning.  Hijinks.  Oh and mayhem too.

don't let online personas fool you pianistimo.

If we ever met I am sure we would sit down and have a cup of tea and have a chat about our kids. Unless of course you mentioned the "g" word in which case I'd be compelled to show you the door.

OTOH, if I were to meet young henrah we would probably share a scooby. If I met a certain other member well we probably wouldn't be sitting down long, possibly. But I digress.

I hate halloween because it's just another f***ing American custom that has made its way into my country. What makes it worse is that Australian kids are really beginning to get into it, including my own.

So I am torn between trying to impress upon them the need to resist US cultural imperialism and letting them join their friends doing something they think is really fun.

What do you do? Maintain your political integrity by telling halloween to go f**k itself or embrace it cos you know it makes your kids happy? This is one aspect of parenting that  sucks.

I watched Creep last night, and I feel really bad for the poor fellow! He only wanted some tasty, bloody guts to eat and to feed to his rats - but no, he had to be branded 'evil' and get killed for killing.

Hehehe, 'share a scooby', I've never heard that term before ada! But yes, if I was holding we most likely would! About your parenting trouble: although this might be a bit late, I think you should let your kids have fun with Halloween because if you don't you might incite some hatrid in the kids towards you as you most likely will be the only parent who doesn't allow it, and your kids might get teased at school. There's an endless line of bad consequences from not letting your children have fun at Halloween, and after all, it's just a bit of fun isn't it? I mean, you aren't being forced into it are you?

Hope all went well,
Henrah

thanks for the tip henrah.

But you see, I'm not alone in disliking halloween. A lot of other Australians feel the same way about the US cultural creep and I know a lot of parents face the same dilemma as me.

In fact kids who do go trick or treating here are likely to encounter someone telling them to piss off to America.

Anyway I relented, didn't I  ::) They got to do the halloween thing. sigh.

As long as they don't start wanting to celebrate the fourth of july.

And isn't it Thanksgiving in Australia soon? No, seriously, the only way that Australians will start celebrating the fourth of July will be if that just coincidentally happens to become the day when the country finally achieves fully independence from a certain other counrty of my acquaintance (that'll have to be ALL of Australia, including Melbourne, of coure - by which reference I mean that a Melburnian once said to me that it's nice to have A'stralia so close by - you have only to drive out of Melbourne and there it is...).
