Favourite Piano Concertos?
on: January 06, 2007, 06:58:29 PM
I know it changes all the time, but at the moment, what are your favourite piano concertos?

Right now I'm totally in love with
Kabalevsky Piano Concerto No. 1
Prokofiev Piano Concerto No. 2

Of course Rachmaninov's No. 2 and No. 3 will always be two of my very favourites.

I find that I really like most of the piano concertos I listen to.  Unfortunately I haven't listened to a LOT of them.  Seeing other favourites might give me ideas on which to find and listen to first, if I haven't heard them already~

Absolutely. No. 3 is good too, but...
It all happens on Discworld, where greed and ignorance influence human behavior... and perfectly ordinary people occasionally act like raving idiots.

A world, in short, totally unlike our own.

For me,
Abslute favorite is Brahms 2.
Then come
Rachmaninoff 1,2,3
Liszt Totentanz
Franck Les Djinns
Schumann A minor
Beethoven 3,4,5
and for modern,
Barber.  The barber is so amazing, showy, effective...

It has got to be Bartok No.2, especially the second movement. My God, the use of harmony and the orchestration are just incredible!!!

I have never heard LIszt's 3rd.  I have only read of it even once.  Is it real?  What?  Explain, please?

leroy anderson's
rimsky-korsakov - capriccio espanole
amy beach
poulenc (for one piano - final concerto - not the two piano d minor concerto)

in the last movement of poulenc's concerto you will hear stephen foster's 'old folks at home'  offenbach's famous 'can-can' and frequent tango rhythms.

Tom

I understand exactly what you mean!  It's just... Prokofiev's second concerto speaks to me more than any other of his works (that I have heard.)  The first movement suggests to me the deep darkness deep within the earth, then the concerto slowly works it's way up to the surface, then in the final movement, I feel like there is a furious god-like force falling from the sky.... or somthing like that.  I also love how if you take the two themes from the first and last movements, it's like the soul of the peice has completly shifted from a haunting, ethereal narrante theme a much more personal, dramatic human theme.

That, and I heard the second first so... even if the third is a better peice put together, I still think there was more deep, dramatic, soul-wrenching material then the third.  Which isn't bad, by any means.  The third concerto isn't as heavy... actually, not heavy at all.  Quite refreshing.  Just a big change.

My favorite part of the third concerto is the last 2 or so minutes, you know, with all of the double glissandos and whatnot.  Does that make me shallow?

By the way... I've seen the score and how in the name of Oprah do you finger those? (double glissandos?)

you either play them as plain glissandos or just play them as clusters. You can choose! As described in another thread on this forum, the glissandos are easier but the clusters give you a more whip-like effect...

For most of my life, since the 1950s, the Rachmaninov 3rd has been my favourite concerto.
I first heard it on the radio (or wireless as we called it then) played by that wonderful English pianist Cyril Smith, whose pianist wife Phyllis Sellick died only last week aged 95.
But there are other concertos I love as well. At the moment, the Beethoven 4.
Last thing he said: "Play Bach for me".
