I agree with you almost completly! I would just replaced Chopin Scherzo no.3  with Scherzo no.2 in b flat minor..:)

Interesting. My choices are all different from yours.

Symphonic: Dukas "The Sorcerer's Apprentice"

Piano+Orch: Brahms Scherzo from PC No.2 in Bb major

Piano solo: Medtner Scherzo from Sonata Romantica OR Chopin Scherzo No.4

I'll take all of Beethoven's and all of Bruckner's scherzi from any of their symphonies over any other scherzi, period! Yes!

I'll have to give number one more thought...if movement two of Brahms's 2nd Piano Concerto is considered a scherzo, then I'd say that's a scherzo quite fine! No more thought required.

As for number three...I'd say Chopin's in the order, 3, 4, 2, 1...or 4, 3, 2, 1. Shoot, play them all...does it really matter?

You yourself know you've faults with playing these scherzi all in a line on one program, Mr. "User named after conductor/composer Furtwängler who cries for your not picking any of the scherzi he's written..." You said four scherzi in a row is silly, even as you listened to Slava Richter deliver them masterfully, one after the other...

Hey, calm down, my sub conscience...these are mean shots. I love Furt's 3rd Symphony and always will.

Enough!

I'm going to Zaxby's 8)

Saint-Saens Piano Concerto 2.

And my favourite movement of anything when I want to be cheered up.

That's not a scherzo. Rachmaninoff didn't include any scherzo movements in his piano concertos.

I do believe that the the 2nd concerto 3rd movement is a Scherzando

That is not the same thing as a scherzo. Scherzando literally means "joking", and is a compliment to the first part of the tempo marking, which is Allegro. It is not a true scherzo, though.

best symphonic scherzo: tchaikovsky symphony no. 6 [Agreed]

best piano-orch scherzo: Brahms Piano Concerto #2 in Bb, OP. 83

best piano solo scherzo: Chopin Scherzo #3

But, to make mention of closely following:

Brahms F Minor Sonata Scherzo
Chopin Sonata #2 Scherzo
Mendelssohn-Rachmaninoff Scherzo from a MSND

For us musicians, the music of Beethoven is the pillar of fire and cloud of mist which guided the Israelites through the desert.  (Roughly quoted, Franz Liszt.)

A scherzo (plural scherzi) is a piece of music or a movement, in a certain style, that forms part of a larger piece such as a symphony. The word "scherzo" means "joke" in Italian. Sometimes the word scherzando is used in musical notation to indicate that a passage should be played in a playful manner.

Yes. And it is suppose to have a form. Which is quite simililar to the older minuet and trio.

Yeah, but not in the drastic sense of the word. Point being, that movement from that Rachmaninoff concerto is NOT a scherzo, no matter how you look at it. It doesn't have the form and it doesn't have the meter. It has scherzando in the tempo marking, which just means "joking" and nothing more. It is not and never will be a true scherzo.

:o woa calm down calm down (in scouse accent) point taken

we have somewhat digressed from the subject matter here with this err debate
like Napoleon i struggle to see when i have been beaten

as i am not familier with the movement i feel i can't follow up this argument
to point this topic back on track i will list some of my favourites

Brahms: Symphony No. 4 3rd movement
Mahler: symphony No. 6 3rd movement (sort of joking in a sinister way)

I think my favorite scherzi are:

Orchestral - Mahler Symphony No. 7, 3rd Movt.
Piano and Orchestra - Litolff Concerto Symphonique No. 2-5 scherzo movts
Piano - Chopin - Scherzo No. 3

Of course, this list might change in the next few hours (minutes).
