HARRY POTTER!
on: February 16, 2004, 04:39:58 AM
Does anyone here read the Harry Potter books?  (and no, they do not encourage evil satanistic rituals requiring Mrs. Norris the cat)  I've read them all thru 3 times.  Anyone else here a harry potter dork?

I've read the first four.  They were good, but what is behind the massive sensation that they are?

I've read them and liked them. I wouldn't say they're my favourite books, though. The rest of my family, however, are scarily obsessed.

My great-grandpa was called Harry Potter.

The thing I don't understand about them is that they are not exceptional literature, yet they are acclaimed by everyone. I have read bits of them and the language is very boring. I don't get it.

I will probably be hated now.

You have a point.  I will elaborate my thoughts a bit further, in a way supporting yours.  They are good books, but not great books.  The language is rather plain, straightforward, the characters straightforward, nothing deeply symbolic; in short, the stories make you feel good with their happy endings and cute humor rather than depress you, scare you, or make you twist your brain over some deep thought.  They are light reading, to be kind of casually enjoyed; not analyzed like literature.

Those books are like pop music, but I have read all of them. They are very entertaining, but not great. They  don't make me think about stuff like some other great literature masterpieces would do.

Harry Potter is my mind's cotton candy. It's infinitely fluffy, making it good for mindless relaxation. I've read them at least 20 times each, but only because I sometimes forget to go to the library and get new books.

The movies aren't perfect, but they're good entertainment.

lol.  I know some one who had read each in the series over 100 times each lol

they're not perfect,  but they're addictive for some weird reason

Never seen the film though,  even though I live near where the film was shot.

Maybe if you took the time to remember they were written for kids and not grownups you would change your perspective on  them.
I for one found the first book to be very well written and quite intriguing for a book destined to kids. Not the sort of stuff you will find in America.
