What're you going to do for your birthday crabface?

Indeed, would appear to be a genius month.

Some work has been done on the birth signs of great pianists and composers.

If memory serves, the best month to be born in is October if you want to be a great musician.

Maybe September, nine months earlier and the coming of the cold and rainy weather encourage the beginning of the reproductive process...

why then does he use an asterisk for 'hot.'

nah.  it's in the water.  everybody knows that.  when one lady gets pregnant on the block - everyone else does around the same time.  maybe it's lunar or something, too.  it's this wierd phenomenon.  take any neighborhood.  if there is one pregnant lady - there are bound to be more in a matter of weeks.

unless - unless you go to disneyland and ride on that ride that defies gravity.  i think that's what happened when i got pregnant with #2.  didn't have any children for five years - go on the ride - what do you know.  am pregnant.  *my sister-in-law on my hubby's side pushed me onto it against my will at the time, too.  now, i'm thinking - that was ok i guess.  it's that circular ride that sucks you up against the wall and you levitate.  the only thing i hated is that everything on you goes up.  turn your eyes to the left - your cheek is up near your eye.

well, there are a lot of wives tales.

oh.  sorry.  i forgot to mention.  me and hubby had a ripping good time the night before.  i never thought anything would come of it.  most children are accidents.  just chalk it up to no real planning at all.  your birthday is completely random.  and, yet - i think somehow God knows when each one of us is supposed to come into the world.  take what the doctor says and you still have to add three weeks. none of my children came on their 'due date.'

i would have been a love child had my parents not gotten married.  i mean they're barely married nine months and voila a baby.  but, hey - you have more energy when you are younger.  more brains when you are older.  but, my mom was an exception.  she was a very calm and nice mom - and very wise for her age.  (18 at the time - 19 when i was born).

**do you ever wonder if anyone takes your personal info off this thread and adds it to their pile of secret information about you.  i advise you all to change your birthday by one day or a week.

I wouldn't want to take - still less inhabit - a neighbourhood such as the kind you mention and I hope that whatever afflicts its "water" supply doesn't also affect mine...

Other than to recognise it as just one of the more bizarre illustrations of why I'm happy to remain childless, I really cannot respond to the above. I have heard rumours that there are easier ways to have children, though. In another post recently, you wrote that yours must have come from somewhere. I remained content in that knowledge until you expanded upon the details as you have here.

oh.  sorry.  i forgot to mention.  most children are accidents.
And there I was, thinking that you were a decent and honourable mother! Now you've dashed all that impression and left us all with one of two SUVs belting into one another at high speed and, "lo and behold" (a phrase that you just might recognise), nine months later an accidental child is born. This makes the bizarre legends about the birth of Jesus seem quite normal by comparison!

just chalk it up to no real planning at all.
Well, no one in his/her right mind would want to "plan" anything quite like this, would they?

your and, yet - i think somehow God knows when each one of us is supposed to come into the world.
What? - even by accident?

take what the doctor says and you still have to add three weeks. none of my children came on their 'due date.'
If the above is how you have children, can you really blame them? I'd imagine that they'd be scared stiff to "come" on any "date"!...

i would have been a love child had my parents not gotten married.
You mean that your parents would have loved you - or one another - or both - had they not gotten themselves married in the nick of time? Oh, come now! - surely this isn't the case...

sorry to have dashed your dreams, alistair.  would it console you to know that i was elated each time.  for my husband, the first child caused him to be quite petrified.  he was really ecstatic when our son was born though.  probably because he was a he.  you know, first born son.  he was so proud.  seems that he got over his fear on that very day.  never really changed that many diapers unless he had to, though.  now, when he sees babies - he talks to them.  it used to be that he would flee the area.

for instance, both of us (now that kids are older) went into a restaurant - were seated and the next people to come had a two or three year old asleep on the shoulder and were seated next to us.  25 years ago - my husband would have asked for another seat somewhere far away.  this time - he's smiling and asking questions about the child.  it's really amazing when you have your own.  you overcome a lot of fears.  so, don't rule it out alistair - you never know!  you might like kids if you have some of your own.

btw, my husband was about 44 when our son was born.  we have two more.  five and seven years apart from each other.  (17, 12, 5).

A friend of mine is currently expecting her second child (due in March) and so far as I know her husband didn't take her to anywhere with gravity-defying devices... I do hope it's not a sign that the child isn't his... lol! Illicit visits to theme parks...

wow.  there are a lot of may birthday's here.

elspeth - sorry to be so confusing.  i seemingly couldn't have another baby for five years.  desperate measures - you know.  but, then - it wasn't really my choice to go on the ride.  i was fairly surprised to get sick a few days later.  i completely associated it with the ride.

sorry to have dashed your dreams, alistair.
You haven't! - nor could you have done, in fact, since having children is not something about which I have ever knowingly dreamt.

would it console you to know that i was elated each time.
It wouldn't surprise me, either!

for my husband, the first child caused him to be quite petrified.  he was really ecstatic when our son was born though.  probably because he was a he.  you know, first born son.  he was so proud.  seems that he got over his fear on that very day.  never really changed that many diapers unless he had to, though.  now, when he sees babies - he talks to them.  it used to be that he would flee the area.

When did I ever suggest - and when and why did you ever assume - that I don't - or even might not - like children?! That's absurd! It's also abit insulting (although I know you did not mean it that way), in that it's almost tantamount to suggesting that I don't like Muslims, or Jews, or - well, even Christians! I just don't want any children of my own and never have done. I don't have "fears" about them either, so it would appear that there would be none to be overcome by having any. Too many people just assume that parenthood is for everyone; to my mind, those that do this are, albeit unwittingly, undermining it, for it is something of such importance that it does not - and should not be expected to - fall to all of us, as in the "anyone can do it" school of non-thought. Not everyone can play the piano, either. I hope that this puts your mind at rest on where I stand in regard to that subject!

far be-it from me to foist off a crying baby on you alistair.  it would impinge on anything that we might have in terms of understanding between us.  just the same as you saying i am like an suv crashing into my  hsuband to produce progeny.  i mean - that was just a joke, right?!  (i did laugh about it).  the fact of the matter is - compositions are babies all the same.  the birth is an important date.  you complain it didn't come sooner.  people congratulate you.  someone might even send a cigar (although i wouldn't know).  balloons are tied on the mailbox (well, maybe not that far).  and then, a couple of days later - everyone forgets about it excepting the proud parent/s.

I know that you'd do no such thing, of course! Apart from any other considerations, it would entail your bringing one from wherever you are in Penn to Bath, UK and, recalling as I do the hoops through which you seemed to be putting yourself a few months back about trying to get to London on your own, I had assumed the likelihood of your successfully bringing a baby to The Sorabji Archive to be a good deal slimmer than the baby itself. Anyway, you were referring not specifically to "babies" but to "children" - and even a childless person like I am knows that children do not remain babies for very long...

just the same as you saying i am like an suv crashing into my  hsuband to produce progeny.  i mean - that was just a joke, right?!  (i did laugh about it).
I did not write that you personally were like an SUV at all; what I did write was in response to your remarks about gravity-defying rides at disneyland and most children being accidents - and yes, it was, of course, a joke.

the fact of the matter is - compositions are babies all the same.  the birth is an important date.  you complain it didn't come sooner.  people congratulate you.  someone might even send a cigar (although i wouldn't know).  balloons are tied on the mailbox (well, maybe not that far).  and then, a couple of days later - everyone forgets about it excepting the proud parent/s.
Well, I cannot, of course, speak from experience of the complaint, congratulations, cigars or balloons on mailboxes that you write of as being attendant upon the birth of a Pennsylvanian child but, as far as your comments about compositions being babies are concerned, when a Canadian colleague once asked me how many children I had, I replied "34", because that was the latest opus number that I had allotted to a piece at that time; whether he understood what I meant or whether he went away with the impression that I was too appallingly promiscuous to be allowed anywhere near Canada I have no idea...

Dear me! Don't you think you're getting abit old still to be contributing to threads on internet piano fora when there were no such things as the internet or pianos when you were born and even threads then had a quite different connotation to the one they have here? And you're still a working farmer at that age, too?! Amazing! When exactly did you abandon carpentry for the agricultural life?

I daresay that Susanistimo might tell us when her birthday is, though...

My dear pianistimistimistimstimo, it is surely rather too late for you to clam up now, for you above almost all others here have already given out such vast quantities of personal information about your private life and circumstances. Let me assure you, however (at least as far as I possibly can), that no one here is taking any of this and distributing - still less actually "selling" - any of it to anyone else. I did not, as it happens, omit to reveal the names of my cats; it just appears that no one - even including you - seems to have found them when I did declare them (and I'm not about to repeat them). You are dispensing what seems to me to be salutaryadvice here in suggesting ample discretion in what personal information one should or should not reveal on fora such as this one (even if you do so rather tardily in your own case). I am no more asking that you reveal your birthday as I am that you remove your shoes for Thal or anyone else for any multi[ple of 10 bucks, but at the same time I take leave to doubt that any harm could possible come of your declaring the date...

And you really do not have to keep calling me "ahinton", you know, Susan...

Over to you...

Well, don't look at me in that context, then; I don't keep "personal info stacks" on anyone here other than (a) with their prior express written consent and (b) unless the info concerned has been provided to us by the person concerned in the full advance knowledge that it will be retained on our database, used only in the donor's interests and never declared to anyone else without their prior express written consent.

I cannot speak for what anyone else does, however...
