Best video performance of Bach-Busoni Chaconne?
on: March 06, 2007, 02:16:32 AM
Question is really in the title.  Does anyone know of any good (preferably free) videos of this piece. Youtube ones suck - by and large.  2 semi decent ones on piano-e-competition but nothing to write home about. Any advance on those??

I recommend another recording... not even video (pardon me... )

Heifetz's recording of the original.  In my opinion, it far outstrips any other recording, transcription or not.

Of course, other people think it's "less about Bach and more about Heifetz," but I think it's incredible.

I agree! I know the recording well Dan but it is really a piano one im looking for and really its a video - im looking for what pianists do with their hands (fingerings/chord distributions etc - missed out notes!!!! of which ive witnessed too many so far).  Thanks for th input though...Im a Heifitz fan too! ;D

Oh I saw the most amazing video of this but I can't remember who the pianist was or what the video was called or anything about it for that matter.

Just kidding.

it might be on youtube. grimaud certainly has the best video ive seen. however, she is a bit weak at times. she doesnt have the power and emotion ive heard in michelangeli or hamelin's recordings.

Have not seen the Hamelin, but strongly dislike the Grimaud.

My favorite piano recording is the Weissenberg.  His repeated note passage is about twice as fast as any other recording.

:D

Yeah Weissenberg is very rarely not f*cked up as far as speed and fury goes.  Randomly I actually really liked one of the videos from the e-comp that someone else mentioned; the one by Claire Huangci.  Her performance had a lot of articulation and nuances I haven't heard in any others :O

If you can find it, Rozalyn Turek has a live video recording.
As always, a lot of very interesting things!

for video:
Don't like Tureck's video
hamelin was ok, but it's u know... always Hamelin.
Grimaud's is suprisingly good.
Kissin's is not bad neither. (One of the perf by him that i don't dislike)

For recording:
I actually really like Mikhail Pletnev's (The bootleg bach recital and the carnegie)

I also like Sokolov's live Brahms version of it.

little did u know, Eugen d’Albert, whom the transcription is dedicated to, criticize Busoni's composition, claiming that the original violin partita is not suitable for 'two-hands', saying the enrichment such as double octaves and bass note will bash the original motif of the partita.

We can clearly see Eugene was wrong about that. (And Busoni did stood up for his own transcription saying Bach definately was not writing the piece ONLY for violin, and restricting this piece to one instrument was a mistake.)

Anyway, I am studying this piece right now (i learnt the notes last year, and is just memorizing it and picking out details.)

I hope one day i can make a video perf of this and put it on youtube too. (well, i am not fancying myself to compete with the video perf i stated in earlier in this thread.)

A treat:
Marc-Andre Hamelin - Bach-Busoni Chaconne:
https://www.megaupload.com/?d=C29C8E60

Enjoy! it is a wonderful performance. Tremendous piece. It is incorrectly named Liszt/bach... I ripped it and uploaded it typing in the wrong name.
Thanks,
Tom

thanks for those suggestions guys.  NB it should be noted however good the violin performances are..they can never do justice to Busoni's transcription - the reason is Busoni's wasnt composed for the violin.  I agree the violinists all play the Bach work well.  But really its the Busoni one that is in question - of course how the violinists play the Bach must inform us but it is in many ways a different work.

I forget who it was but one analylist said that the Busoni transcription actually made the form of the Bach work clearer and more crystaline.  Im not down playing Bach - He was a genius of proportions we dont see anymore but it must be remarked that really the Busoni isnt a second best - it is in its own right one of the great works of the keyboard and was in one survey actually ranked in the top 10 of the entire keyboard literature.
