What the heck is up with what's his name

Okay, so this pianist says to me something about Opus 10 no 1 and just EXPECTED me to know he was talking about Chopin........what's up with that?  My mind immediately went to Beethoven....does that make me stupid or uncultured or something?  Would someone help me grok this?

I rather think that most people would automatically assume Chopin, rather like if one spoke of the "C# minor quartet" or the "F minor Ballade" most people would likewise assume, respectively, Beethoven and Chopin.

Maybe because Chopin's Opus 10, being the first set of etudes, and the etudes being the most famous works of Chopin, is known better unversally than Beethoven's Opus 10.


Btw, what is Beethoven's Opus 10? Is it a set of sonatas, or is it an Opus with many different works in?

It's a set of 3 or 4 sonatas, can't remember which.

It took me ages to figure out comme's op.10no2 referred to Chopin and not Beethoven.  Least I think it does, Beethoven's isn't a particularly an SDC piece but then again neither is Chopin - which is it?

It's not really furious like op10 no1 or 25 12 - it's obviously a pregnant dog to play but I would think the trick is to make it sound easy,

would depend on who was talking to me...i would expect a first year college student to mean op10/1 of chopin because in year one they are all obsessed with chopin and technical difficulties... It it was DMA student - I would expect the Beethoven option would be more likely as they tend to be SLIGHTLY less obsessed with the mechanics of things by that stage.  However I usually just let someone talk for a few seconds - I find listening to someone really makes it obvious which one they are talking about...If they dont make it obvious which one they are addressing its usually not worth talking to them about it because they dont know anything.  I nearly always get my score out when someone wants to discuss music..i like to have the naked text infront of me and preferably be near a piano.

For me, Op.10 No.1 is now an instinctual reference to Chopin, mostly because of the amount of chatter about it on this forum. It has desensitized me and I have become tolerant of its use.

Much like Op.111, Op.53, and Op.25 No.2.
