The site went down as the server could not cope with the traffic.

18 members and 1 post every 3 weeks was too much.

I went there once, but one post was longer than the complete works of Teleman and even less interesting.

I never went back.

The Sorabjians are indeed a strange breed.

I'e been out of the country for a week and just returned to find that the Sorabji forum (and the site itself) seems to be in difficulties, so I have emailed one of the people who put it together and await his response. Sorry I cannot be more informative at this time, but I'm sure that there will be a simple explanation and that it will all be up and running again shortly; in the meantime, apologies for the inconvenience.

So how come you know that the forum is currently down (for whatever reason)? And, in any case, Telemann has two "n"s - and surely nothing on God's (or anyone else's) earth is longer than the complete works of Telemann (or at least I hope not)...

The Sorabjians are indeed a strange breed.

One does one's best as often as one can - and, while we're at it, I might add that someone once said to me of the Wilde quote that you use as your sign-off that, as true Italian friends stab you in the front and the back at the same time, such independence of hands demonstrates that it's no wonder that there are and have been such wonderful Italian pianists...

Well, now we have all been enlightened about that vital statistic of Italian commercial vehicle design, perhaps we can get back to talk the talk (rather than the torque) on the topic...

No, Watson, I'm sure you're not - my surprise here has more to do with the fact that, if you were really so disenchanted with what you saw on the Sorabji forum after just the one visit that you decided not to visit it again, you nevertheless took note of this thread which one might have supposed would have had no interest for you whatsoever. I'm still intrigued by your Telemann reference, however, so do please expand on that a little if you will!

As an incentive...

Hey, Meister Telemann,
Write me a sonata
Daylight come
An' I wanna hear one

Ahh, i have made an error here. I am getting my forums mixed up. I thought this thread was about the old sorabji forum started by rygilliam.

I did not realise that the Sorabji Archive had one of its own.

I must join and perhaps my knowledge of 3 finger bluegrass might come in useful.

Sorabji surely must have been aware of the possibilities of the 5 string banjo.

The complete works of Liszt give a challenge, given about 1300 works, with many of them being exceptionally long.  Can we see a comparison?

For us musicians, the music of Beethoven is the pillar of fire and cloud of mist which guided the Israelites through the desert.  (Roughly quoted, Franz Liszt.)

You mean "ryguillian". OK. The Telemann reference remains unexplained, but all in good time, one may suppose...

I did not realise that the Sorabji Archive had one of its own.
But presumably you do now.

I must join and perhaps my knowledge of 3 finger bluegrass might come in useful.
"For what", I cannot help but wonder - by which, of course, I mean for what might that knowledge come in useful, rather than for what reason you might like to join that forum...

Sorabji surely must have been aware of the possibilities of the 5 string banjo.
If he did, I'm sure that he neither "fretted" over it, nor hit anyone over the head with it, nor even used it as a culinary mandolin - still less composed fugues for it. For the record, the "grass" in his garden was not "blue", either. I somehow suspect that he'd have put up 2, rather than 3, "fingers" to any banjolier that sought to trespass upon his territory to entertain him; furthermore, the only thought that the instrument may have prompted him to have about the lamp-post at the corner of the street would have been about the likely dog-pee thereupon.

Depends on how you view "nice". Whilst it is well known that the Brits always resort to meteorological references when either cornered or short of anything else about which to speak or write, I have to say that my recent few days in the "heel" of Italy, enjoyable as they otherwise were, were unseasonably and uncharacteristically chilly, following a cold snap here in UK from which I'd hoped to be able to escape and, now that I have returned to UK, I find that the weather here has apparently been "spring-like" during my brief absence but has returned to a fairly wintry state as if to mark my return. Not funny and - certainly not what I'd call a case of anything "turning out nice again". Ah, well...

With me little stick of Blackpool rock...I am going to burn in the fires of hell, for i am a non-believer.
Dear Mr Thalebanjo,

Won't the rock melt before you burn?

Seriously, though, I do think that you might be wiser to keep reasonably separate your obviously sincere love of the banjo and that of certain kinds of piano music, unless you think that there are real inherent possibilities for banjo transcriptions of piano works by Thalberg, Herz, Pixis and (heaven or even hell forfend) Chopin - and just think how absurd Sorabji's Fantasia Ispanica would sound if arranged for and played by a banjo ensemble.
