I think we all have a crush on m1469..

Others are too numerous to list, and I'd even like to meet people I don't appear to get on well with on the forum.

The overwhelming whole reason we're here is a love for the piano and music, and the arguments or disputes we get into are, in the end, relatively petty and insignifigant.

There are 2 members of this forum that I could actually practically meet, franz_liszt2 and elevateme both come from within 30 miles or so of me.

pianowolfi,  i'm always ready to meet pianists!  of course, i'm ready.  and, you seem the especially sweet and thoughtful kind as well as having a talent for piano and teaching.

i think we can learn from everyone.  just like students.  you have so many perspectives.  at first you may not agree with everyone's --but then when you see where they are coming from, you can understand why their particular views are important to them.

isee thal has given up on yoonie and paris and now is 'into' mayla.  well, the thing is - perhaps it is better this way.  but, i sorta want to hear him play some piano transcriptions and his banjo.  so much for dreams.

i want to see some or all of alistair's masterpieces.  meet jonathan powell.

don't think there is anyone on pianoforum that i wouldn't like to meet.  perhaps i will meet pianowolfi.

might meet cmg at the mahler ressurrection symphony perfomance at the kimmel center!

between orthodontal appointments, etc. - managed to miss a recital of koji's that i really wanted to hear.  between he and my recent teacher - i'd think that would be 'heaven.'

just wondering what happened with doxy's 'personal ad' a while back.  i mean, what came of it.  what happens when good looking piano guys advertise that they wouldn't mind meeting more pianists.  do they suddenly get phone calls off the hook for months at a time - (like that guy who gave out his cell phone number)?  perhaps all pianists should have access to a forum like this before committing to any long term friendships or relationships although from my own perspective - i think a pianist/vocalist relationship is very very nice.  we don't fight over the piano - and yet we both have an appreciation for music of mostly classical genres (ie symphonies, chorales, piano recitals).  also, you don't have the inevitable, or perhaps not inevitable, rivalry as to who really plays the best.

I have actually met three local members of Pianoworld and the occasions have been very positive and rewarding. There don't appear to be any local members here, and as I am a chronic stay-at-home, I doubt I shall meet anybody. Meeting in person is worlds apart from posting on a forum. Differences in musical preference, personality and general philosophy which seem very important on forums tend to disappear altogether in the shared experience of music and live piano playing - or so I have found.

So there is no one here I would not enjoy meeting.

This is an excerpt from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, by Douglas Adams.

There is an art, it says, or rather, a knack to flying. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. Pick a nice day, [The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy] suggests, and try it.

The first part is easy. All it requires is simply the ability to throw yourself forward with all your weight, and the willingness not to mind that it's going to hurt.

That is, it's going to hurt if you fail to miss the ground. Most people fail to miss the ground, and if they are really trying properly, the likelihood is that they will fail to miss it fairly hard.

Clearly, it is the second part, the missing, which presents the difficulties.

One problem is that you have to miss the ground accidentally. It's no good deliberately intending to miss the ground because you won't. You have to have your attention suddenly distracted by something else when you're halfway there, so that you are no longer thinking about falling, or about the ground, or about how much it's going to hurt if you fail to miss it.

It is notoriously difficult to prize your attention away from these three things during the split second you have at your disposal. Hence most people's failure, and their eventual disillusionment with this exhilarating and spectacular sport.

If, however, you are lucky enough to have your attention momentarily distracted at the crucial moment by, say, a gorgeous pair of legs (tentacles, pseudopodia, according to phyllum and/or personal inclination) or a bomb going off in your vicinity, or by suddenly spotting an extremely rare species of beetle crawling along a nearby twig, then in your astonishment you will miss the ground completely and remain bobbing just a few inches above it in what might seem to be a slightly foolish manner.

This is a moment for superb and delicate concentration. Bob and float, float and bob. Ignore all consideration of your own weight simply let yourself waft higher. Do not listen to what anybody says to you at this point because they are unlikely to say anything helpful. They are most likely to say something along the lines of "Good God, you can't possibly be flying!" It is vitally important not to believe them or they will suddenly be right.

Waft higher and higher. Try a few swoops, gentle ones at first, then drift above the treetops breathing regularly.

DO NOT WAVE AT ANYBODY.

When you have done this a few times you will find the moment of distraction rapidly easier and easier to achieve.

You will then learn all sorts of things about how to control your flight, your speed, your maneuverability, and the trick usually lies in not thinking too hard about whatever you want to do, but just allowing it to happen as if it were going to anyway.

You will also learn about how to land properly, which is something you will almost certainly screw up, and screw up badly, on your first attempt.

There are private clubs you can join which help you achieve the all-important moment of distraction. They hire people with surprising bodies or opinions to leap out from behind bushes and exhibit and/or explain them at the critical moments. Few genuine hitchhikers will be able to afford to join these clubs, but some may be able to get temporary employment at them.

It was one of my greatest dreams when I was a child. Once my child girlfriend (she was rather like a boy) asked me to pull her off a fridge to get momentum for flying. I did it and of course she fell painfully :'(. I mean, she HAD actually believed that she could fly. Argh did I feel bad. I didn't want to refuse her request. Though I knew that she would fall. She didn't even cry. She just got *very* silent :o. She used to cry almost never because she wanted to be a boy after all :P.
Later I loved going on rollercoasters and similar machines and spent my whole money on it. These were phases. And often in my dreams I am flying. And I actually would *love* to do base jumping, parachuting or paragliding if not the risk was just to high, at least in my book. I watched these incredible base jumpers in Lauterbrunnen where they jump from a 300 m cliff. Sometimes the parachute won't open...there have been a few cases like that in the last years...

Rebby (though she's been off for a while)

Do you really think she wants to meet the murderer of her step-father ???

Anyway,

I think a few pints with thalbergmad would be a crack. Perhaps with A. Hinton along to go to the bar for us. We could buy him a glass of wine to stop him whingeing. He could sit in the corner reading his dictionary until we needed another drink.  ;D

Oh. and I'd take Pianistimo, just in case some bible bashers came in. She could keep them occupied while we made our escape to the next pub.

actually, being a bartender would give one more control.  'no.  you can't have another drink.'  of course, you'd have to know how to jump over the counter really swiftly - bottle in hand.

thalberg - you're so kind to put me on the list.  i think i'd like to meet everyone on pianoforum, actually.  you among the first, of course.  to me - anyone who plays piano is worth meeting.  so much for bars and internet.

You get all sorts in English Pubs.
Even Americans are allowed in. Not sure if they'd get out again though.

I think that bringing someone in the condition you stated would be very cruel. they'd probably be dying for a drink.

EDIT: the above paragraph would have made sense if pianistimo had not removed her statement about bringing someone to the pub who was suffering from all the medical problems related to drinking too much alcohol, as a warning to the other people there who were enjoying a nice cool pint of ale, or wine, (pint of wine, that sounds nice).

what is odd is there is some study where it showed that men who drink moderate amounts of beer live longer and more stress free. same for women who drink moderate amounts of red/white wine.  perhaps the key word is 'moderate.'

i've said several times i want to meet you.  remember, i invited you to the concert at ursinus college and said i'd pay for tickets.  you have a short memory.  besides you already have too many friends.  but, i don't mind being another.

shorty short - people complain if i write too much, or too little.  now - i am caught in the middle.  i go back and delete parts of my posts so people don't have to skip over it.

Rubbish. It was not a long post. I just think that you wrote something that you regreted.

Poems of Ecstasy – Scriabin’s Complete Piano Works Now on Piano Street

The great early 20th-century composer Alexander Scriabin left us 74 published opuses, and several unpublished manuscripts, mainly from his teenage years – when he would never go to bed without first putting a copy of Chopin’s music under his pillow. All of these scores (220 pieces in total) can now be found on Piano Street’s Scriabin page. Read more
