The Prodigy Who Saw Into the Future – Lili Boulanger’s Piano Music

A teenage girl with forward-looking ideas, Lili Boulanger had enough determination to successfully navigate the competitive, patriarchal, and conservative music scene of Paris. Despite a constant fight against illness, she achieved great mastery as a composer, and left behind a significant catalog of works characterized by intense emotional depth, in a sophisticated, post-Romantic, Impressionist style. Now, all her scores for solo piano are available to Piano Street’s members. Read more

Random improv on Verdi Miserere
on: May 31, 2007, 05:53:51 PM
I'm actually a compulsive improviser, so much so that it frequently disrupts allegedly "organised" practice. This time, I was doing a rehearsal session, taped it all, and had a little warmup for what I was really supposed to be doing  :)

I've got to admit the improv has a certain debt to the Verdi-Liszt Il Trovatore, but I've played that paraphrase so many times it seems it's almost in my bloodstream. Anyway, hopefully it's entertaining enough.

All comments welcome, of course.

The the Liszt Il Trovatore any good?
For us musicians, the music of Beethoven is the pillar of fire and cloud of mist which guided the Israelites through the desert.  (Roughly quoted, Franz Liszt.)

Yeah, quite decent I think. The second half is possibly a bit over the top, but he does the first very tastefully.

Thanks for posting! I'll add your name and your improv to the
improvisations list.

I liked it a lot. I haven't heard the pieces upon which you
based your improv. But my favorite sections were where there
was a melody sort of "sandwiched" within sweeping, virtuosic
arpeggios.

Ah, the so-called three-handed effect section. I play a lot of romantic-era transcriptions and as they often contain the effect, it's become rather second nature to me - hence it being the sort of thing that comes out in an improv.
