Chinese Solo Piano Pieces
on: June 03, 2007, 11:11:43 PM
Does anybody here know of any Chinese piano pieces (preferably solo)? I'm interested in learning some, but the only one that I know of is the Yellow River Concerto, and that's too difficult. I've learned Rachmaninoff's 23/5, Full Moonlight, some Bach Fugues and a concerto, and some Chopin Nocturnes and the Military Polonaise, so my level is around grade 8, probably a bit higher.

There's a good deal of like.... iconoclastic pentatonic stuff you can look up, but there's also a really cool modern piece by Bright Sheng called "My Song". Dunno if it would be too hard though. Maybe pieces from the Little Mermaid suite? I think that's a fairly common Chinese piece to play.

Tan Dun's
Eight Memories in Watercolor
(published by Schirmer) are wonderful. They are somewhat like Schumann
Scenes from Childhood

I heard a neat set of pieces by Chassins - 3 Chinese Pieces. Obviously he's not Chinese, but it was still sort of a nice set. My favorite was "Rush Hour in Hong Kong."

sunflowers is a good example of music sounding much harder than it is though, so it may be a good choice.

try finding a transcription of the butterfly lovers violin concerto for piano alone. I've heard it once, its not that hard, long enough, nice melodies, and its *chinese!

Well maybe you never thought of asking if there's anyone currently in China and from China, I'm from China and currently on Chinese sheet music sites they don't have many Chinese pieces!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But there are lots of books that contain Chinese sheet music, if you ever get the chance to come to China, you can try and find these pieces:
Prelude and Dance by Huang An Lun, a piece that I'm learning now.
The Shepherd boy's flute by He Lu Ting, a simple but beautiful piece.
Also check out the Sheet music request part of this forum. You'll find the Liu yang River and The Yellow River Concerto, two original Chinese pieces. I'll tell you more when I start playing more Chinese stuff.
