allentown band concert
on: June 23, 2007, 06:14:57 PM
the oldest band in america (but unfortunately the announcer got the date wrong and said 1928 instead of 1828). ronald demkee is the world's best band conductor, imo. LOVED the 'blow, gabriel, blow' of cole porter featuring the trumpet section. and, of course, west side story selections of leonard bernstein. and, the candide overture. of course, when you have a band playing - there's more strict time. i would have sorta liked to see the candide overture without any strict band tempo to keep up with - but everything else was very very sousa marchish and cool. there were two xylophonists playing at one point.
did you know the allentown band just had it's premiere at carnegie hall june 20, 2007. yes. that's how good they are. and they do it just for fun. not much money in it - and this concert was free.
